Hi all. Can anyone help me find out about what literary works are studied at NZ secondary schools, particularly in years 11 - 13?

Thanks in advance

I was curious about your question because I was wondering if they'd moved on from the sort of texts I'd studied in NZ at that age 15 or so years ago...

the answer from this site appears to be they've stuck to a lot of the classics and then added some more!

We did the SE Hintons, To Kill a Mockingbird, Of Mice and Men, Crucible, and the George Orwells in the early 90s as well as a Dickens and a Shakespeare a year. The Shakespeare texts appear to be from the same selection: We did Hamlet, Merchant of Venice and King Lear over the three years.

We also had a section on New Zealand fiction and poetry.

The choices vary from school to school depending on the teachers' specialist books, but the process of text evaluation and report is always the same. The trick is to hope you get a book you (or rather your kids) can make a connection with.

OK, last year (Y11):The Devil's Disciple, The Siege, Lord of the Flies

This year (Y12): A View From The Bridge, Julius Caesar, Catherine Mansfield Short Stories

That was just her class though, others studied other books, including A Streetcar Named Desire.
