Well, the nice men from airfoam came yesterday to do the house, and when I say do the house - they really did the house! They said before they left last night that they'd used a lot more foam than they had estimated and last night after opening some cupboards we realised why - we had wardrobes full of the stuff! They also said last night that they were glad I'd gone out for the day as they had made a bit of a mess and following our cupboard discovery I made a few more investigations this morning when they came back, as I'd also discovered a very damp patch on our bedroom floor. Turned out they had some major problems. The paper they use to stuff the electrical sockets to 'prevent leakage' had completely blown out with the pressure, thus leading to airfoam spraying all over the living room . They had also accidentally drilled right through from the external wall through the internal wall in 5 places which they hadn't realised until they came to fill the walls. So, when they pumped the foam in - it pumped out again- all over our bedroom floor and also in the 'newly decorated' spare bedroom where the force was so great it had sprayed the wall opposite! No wonder they were glad I was out - I'd have gone ballistic!
I have to say they had done a pretty reasonable job of cleaning up and it was just little things I found that led me to ask the full story. They had no idea about the stuff in the wardrobes though so were a little surprised to see what was inside this morning. One wardrobe looks like the inside of a cave - full of airfoam stalactites hanging from the ceiling.
The outcome is that they are now going to pay for the redecoration of our bedroom as there is no way we can match the wallpaper so at least we get a decorated bedroom out of it. Oh - and hopefully the house will be warm too!

Well, the nice men from airfoam came yesterday to do the house,
Sorry about the mess they made, though! Can you get a really nice bedroom out of it?
I take it this is some kind of insulation stuff? Is this the stuff I've seen on tv that you spray in places and therefore don't have to take the whole house apart?
Do you have a link somewhere? Sounds interesting!
thanks,
Daniela

I :laugh then I :wah for you... you seem to have taken that all very calmly considering - I'd have been going up the foamy walls!!
At least they seem to want to rectify the problems they caused instead of running away...

Daniela, you're being very brave asking for a link after my post above! It's like cavity wall insulation back in the UK and yes it gets sprayed between the walls to make the house nice and toasty. Link is www.airfaom.co.nz
Have to say the owner was very nice and very apologetic about the whole thing. Said they'd only ever drilled completely through a wall once before so for it to happen 5 times in our house was very unusual. Probably helped that I'd calmed down after last night and could see the funny side today - so when I tackled him about it I did it in a nice way rather than laying into him.

Thanks for the link :)
Well, we are in Auckland, so chances are we wouldn't have exactly the same people here :)
Hope it all gets sorted quickly and you do have a warm house at the end of it!

*mixed laugh* This is more than a little ironic. We recently bought our house in Nelson too and just today - with the cold snap - started looking into insulation options. I found www.airfoam.co.nz just a few minutes ago - and when I looked for more details, I was led here to your post. I've been more lax in posting here since moving 6 months ago than I intended to be and now, apparently, I'm being not-so-subtly guided back!
How is the new insulation holding up? Do you mind if I PM you a few questions?

Probably not so hilarious at the time, but I'm picturing Victor Meldrew shouting 'I don't believe it'
You'll have a dinner party story for many years to come at least.

I'd be interested in this also as I've heard mixed reviews about airfoam, (including our building inspector who was anti-airfoam).
Basically the problems I've heard about are something to do with it forming a moisture bridge which increases damp issues, and also leading to peeling wallpaper and rooms having to be redecorated.
What I don't know is whether this is the fault of the product, or whether it just happens if it is wrongly installed.
Cheers

The foam is mixed on site and does contain a lot of water which has to dry out. You are advised to leave windows open for 2 weeks afterwards to allow the water to evaporate (so I'm glad we had it done before winter). We have had problems with wallpaper in one room - luckily our bedroom which is the one they're going to pay to redo anyway. I have to say that the wallpaper in there looks ancient anyway - old anaglypta that has been painted and painted and it has bubbled in places but I'm not sure how well this was originally put on. All other rooms have been fine. We do feel it has worked, the house doesn't seem to lose heat like our rental did. It is still a little chilly in the mornings but nowhere near as cold as our rental was that had no insulation and once we start to heat it then it retains tha t heat well.
I have not heard anything about a 'moisture bridge' as the stuff is supposed to be breathable.
We are happy with it and glad we've had it done, especially now the cold weather has hit us.

It's one of those things you can just imagine on a sitcom. Hilarious to watch but less so when it is your house. I did see the funny side though and I would love to have been a fly on the wall when they realised what had happened inside whilst they were busy outside pumping the stuff in.

Thanks zorbster, it certainly does sound a lot easier than removing all the GIB and filling the walls with insulation!
