Hi,
Sorry, more questions!!!!
How long does it take to get residency and how easy is this? My nursing agency tell me that getting a visa will be easy as i am a nurse and Dale can attach onto this with no problem. Does the residency work in the same way?
Dale wants to go straight for residency and not bother with the visa. I just wana make sure that we'll both be accepted 1st time with this route.

Any thoughts?

Residency is a visa/permit?

Normally the nursing agency will try to get you into NZ on a WTR and not a PR (this is what they did for us).

If you are not in a rush to get to NZ then I would recommend you go straight for PR i.e. submit your EOI now.

Most of the process is very similar between a 30 month WTR and a PR e.g. they both need the same medicals and police certificates etc, so you might as well go straight for the PR, and as you have a job offer it will be fast tracked so shouldn't take much longer than the WTR anyway.

I assume you're talking about the difference between a Permanent Residency visa and a Work-To-Residency visa. One is no easier than the other - the same criteria have to be met. However, the WTR visa is slightly quicker to get because it avoids the EOI process and selection from the pool. However, it's been argued that if you can, it's better to go for the PR Visa straight away. It doesn't take much longer, and you will have to do it anyway if you want to stay more than 30 months, and do it from NZ to boot.

We decided to do the PR, as we wanted that extra security, were lucky enough to have plenty of time to do it, and basically wanted to get it all over and done with up-front.

My wifes temporary work visa just took 4.5 weeks door to door. We'll sort out the PR once we're there and settled

My NZ nursing reg took longer to get than the PR, so if you're waiting on NZNC anyway you may as well go for PR, I think. It doesn't matter how quick the WTR process is, if you don't have your nursing reg, you can't go.
Good Luck

Yep, OH has been told exactly the same by Tonix agency... if you've not already applied for your NZ nursing registration, then go for PR.

Having said that, if we wish to try NZ for 12-18 months on a WTR before commiting to PR, does it work out significantly cheaper with regards your application

Mmm.
So really it's just the money thing then.....

It looks like the nursing registration process is gonna be expensive and complicated!!! So many people to ring, write to and get letters of approval etc!!!
Once i have done that, I guess then we apply for residency? Do I necessarily have to have a job offer to get approved? And what about Dale? If I'm approved will he automatically be approved 2?

I don't think that the nursing registration process is too complicated but it can be very slow especially when they keep losing things.

AFAIK, you don't actually need a job offer being a nurse but there is such a shortage of nurses and they are prepared to wait for you, so you may as well get one so as to speed up your application. If you do go for PR with a job offer then you will only have to spend 3 months (assuming they restrict you with a section 18A) in that job before you can move on.

If you get an RRV then Dale will also get one (assuming partner for at least 12 months).

If you want to go with a WTR then you do need a job offer to apply and you have to remain in that job (officially) for the length of the visa.

If you get a WTR then Dale would apply and get a general work visa.

RRV = Returning Residents Visa (PR)
WTR = Work To Residents Visa

We've pretty much decided to go with the residency (I assume thats the RRV?)

So Dale will be able to get one too cause of my (hopefully soon) job offer?

the route you want is PR (Permanent Residency) so you will want to submit an EOI and wait for your ITA ;)

Honestly, you will pick up all the jargon in no time once you get started :D

You send in your EOI (Expression Of Interest). When it's selected, you're sent an ITA (Invitation To Apply) for PR (Permanent Residency).

Thought I would expand on JandM description a bit :)

You send in your EOI (Expression Of Interest) which is placed into a pool of applicants. If it is selected, it is checked and if the details in the EOI appear correct, your status will change to decision successful, you will then be sent an ITA (Invitation To Apply) for PR (Permanent Residency).

The ITA is basically a print out of your EOI which you can update and include medicals, police certificates etc. If all is good and NZIS (New Zealand Immigration Service) believe that you will settle then they grant you an RRV (Returning Residents Visa) which you renew after two years and it becomes an IRRV (Indefinite Returning Residents Visa) then after another three years you can apply for Citizenship.

If NZIS don't think that you will settle, then they will issue you with a WTR (Work To Residence) visa instead.

Thanks heaps!!

Thats really clear now. How easy is it to be selected after submitting my EOI? I know that they're crying out for nurses. So fingers crossed.

Cheers again!!

You need to try the points indicator (http://www.immigration.govt.nz/pointsindicator/) which will tell you how many points you should be able to claim on your EOI.

The selection is done every two weeks and if you have 140 points or more you will be selected, if its less than this amount then you may or may not be selected depending on that weeks selection.

I would expect a nurse with a job offer will have more than 140 points so if you can get your EOI in soon (before next selection date), then you will be selected at the next selection which is 9th April.

You do however need to get your nurse registration done (don't know if you have started this yet?) and this currently appears to be the slowest part of the process.
