:( Is there anybody out there that can help??
My hubby and I have an opportunity to move to NZ sometime this year. We made a fleeting trip at the end of last year to look around (maily central Auckland) but I HATED the accommodation due to the dampness and the lack of heating. (javascript:emoticon(':uhoh') I'm an asthamatic and have a Raynauds disease and neither would tolerate such conditions.) Nevertheles, hubby is still intent on living here (opportunity of a life time, we're also expecting our first child, etc) and he's trying to convince me that there would be rentable accommodation that is brick built, tiled roof (like we have in the UK) that would allow heating to be installed. He also says that the West side of Auckland (Waikatere City) would be the best place to look.
If anyone can enlighten us it would be very much appreciatedjavascript:emoticon('')

Hi ,
If you look at the newer properies in palces like Dannemora in Eastern Auck they are mega bucks and can be great (its a case of suck it and see.... we've only been here 5 weeeks so can't say how it is all year round )
We live in Halfmoon Bay - nice area allbeit abit quiet, but we have a 4 year old.
The area is lovely 10 mins from marina & 15 mins from beach ( walking)
But no good if your young and sinlge or couple ( we are mid/late thirties with a 4 year old ... by no means old but limited as to evenimg outings (with no-one we know here!)
We live in Halfmoon bay and at the moment it is neither damp or cold
can't say what it'll be like in winter --- but I 'm more than happy to keep you informed PM me !
Love Linda xxx

I also suffer from a minor form of Raynauds and REALLY feel the cold. I really don't want to squash you or your husbands enthusiasm, but I would very seriously think about where you live. I think it is essential, in your position, to buy a newly built house that had been fully insulated or one that can easily have gas heating installed. I truly love it here (we live in Browns Bay on the North Shore) but the prospects of another cold, damp NZ winter without proper heating has more or less robbed me of my sanity!! And we have decided to head back to UK (only as a temporary stepping stone to somewhere warmer in Europe eventually). I would truly recommend anyone come to live in NZ but ONLY if you can find the right kind of accommodation to suit you!!

Pete suffers from Reynards too and although we were cold last winter he just wrapped up more so wasn't too bad. It is cold here and if you don't have a strong motivation it could really knock you back. We managed but we have a 'camping and roughing it' background, it had its humourous moments, me getting from bed to shower in 0.01 of a second, no lingering there. We did have a heat exchanger in the main room and a small oil filled radiator in the bedroom. but with no insulation its a bit like p*****g in the wind. Soon as you turn them off the heat just goes.
