My oh trained to be a chef some years ago 1976 to be frank, did all his training
fulltime city and guilds course, but two weeks before the end of the course had to leave due to family problems. However managed to find work as a chef
when college had finished, thought he had all his quals but only has 706 1 and not 706 2 which we found out a couple of months ago.He has over 25years as a chef /catering manager/pub landlord/ industial catering etc.Came out of catering about eight years ago to try something new and would like to find a job in nz in the catering trade again but with not all the quals he thought he had would he be offered a job with his experience of 25 yrs even though he has been out of the job for 8 yrs.I know they are crying out for chefs in nz
and on the skills shortage list and if he did get a job offer would he have enough points for PR.we keep doing the point indicator but each time adds up
differently.he is even willing to go back to college to do a nvq 3 in catering
if he needs to as a last resort. Also how long back has your experience got to be relevent. :(

Sorry, can't help you get more points.
Do hope that someone here will be able to point you in the right direction. Sometimes solutions pop up when you least expect them to!

I kept coming up with 115 points, and I know from looking at the historical data, that there might be just 1 or 2 times a year that this low of points gets chosen.

I looked again at the skills shortage listing and saw that because I have a Masters degree, that added 10 additional points to qualify for a University Lecturer! That is not my line of work, but it gave me some more points.

As far as I can remember the form asks for (and the points are based upon) the number of years experience, it doesn't say anything about when those years are... however, if you have a scout round the NZIS website you shoudl be able to find some slightly more definite answers, failing that someone here is likely to have a useful set of info for you

hiya, we were in a similar situation as far as your catering quals and had applied with the full set of:

City and Guilds Part One in Cookery for the Catering Industry 706/1
City and Guilds Part Two in Cookery for the Catering Industry 706/2
City and Guilds Part One in Food and Beverage Service 707/1
City and Guilds Part Two in Food and Beverage Service 707/2
City and Guilds in Patisserie 711/1
City and Guilds in Communication Skills level two 772/2 (part of city and guilds 706/1)
Royal Institute of Public Health & Hygiene (Food Hygiene and Handling Food)

As well as all these my OH also has 18 years of experience as head chef and retail catering managment - all seemed to be going along quite nicely until on thursday we got an email from our case officer. It seems that if you cannot prove you hold a registered apprenticeship with your Part 1 and Part 2 City & Guilds qualifications, they will not award points for these quals (50 points in our case) and are essentially rendered useless for the purposes of the application! Daft or what. :no

As per his email, he also quotes the following when it comes to applying under the Chef catagory...

Sales and Service Workers
Chef National Certificate in Hospitality (Professional Cookery Level 4 AND a minimum of five years' combined experience in establishments offering á la carte, buffet/banqueting or commercial catering, with a minimum of two years at Chef de Partie (Section National Certificate in Hospitality (Professional Cookery) Level 4 AND a minimum of five years' combined experience in establishments offering á la carte, buffet/banqueting or commercial catering, with a minimum of two years at Chef de Partie (Section Leader) level or higher

Maybe I need correcting on this but I think that the skill you are claiming points for must be in a related job you have been gainfully employed in within the previous 2 years or summat like that.
Good luck

I can sympathise with you. We had a similar problem with my wife's qualifications, she is also a trained and chef. Could not provide evidence of an approved apprenticeship so lost not just the 50 points for qualifications but also the bonus points etc. Every route we tried led to a dead end and C&G was worse than useless. They said that they could provide evidence but in the end just send copies of part 1 and 2 which they knew we already had. There have been so many changes in Skills councils that was a complete dead end also.

Now we are having to apply using my qualifications.

I'm not so sure tbh, we dont recall anything about having to be in a related job in the previous 2 years, and our case officer didint mention it either.

Still a bummer tho.

ok, so say for instance my o/h got on a plane, went to nz got offered a job in catering, would that be enough to get PR,and is there a minimum wage that they will let you except.I dont mean a job in flipping burgers. It just seems to be alot easier to get a job if you go over there.Because if that is what it would take to get to nz then we may well try it.Although i am a bit reluctant
to just sell up and go if its going to come to nothing.:uhoh
