Just wondering what the IT job market is like in New Zealand.
I've been working in IT for 10 years, 6 years working for myself and for 4 years working in the IT department of a reasonably sized FE college where I've moved from entry level technician to systems analyst/network manager to Head of IT Technical Support, managing a team of 8, in quick succession.
Would like a high level technical support or perhaps managerial job but they don't seem so common?

I doubt you've have any problems. The brain drain to Australia seems to mean that good IT people are hard to find. I'm recruiting 3 IT permies at the moment - not network people, sorry, and with visas/PR - and it's hard work!

I assume that Auckland and Wellington are good for IT, but are there any other cities with reasonable prospects?
I'd ideally like to live in Tauranga but have no real idea. My wife's family are in Te Puke, Auckland and Wellington.

Stacks of IT work in Welly. It's a real issue, almost all of our last 20 recruits have been immigrants, so there is a real shortage of skilled IT staff in town. I think it's similar in Auckland as well.

If you show up in Welly with IT qualifications, you'll get a job offer. I went to two recruiters and was lined up with nine jobs between them in a week. At the end of that week I had a job offer. It's crazy.

In Welly there are a lot of government departments, and a lot of vendors who service the government. The former generally require you to be legally able to work (i.e. are unlikely to sponsor your visa), whereas the latter may very well sign for you if you've the right skillset. Good IT people are hard to find right now. You've got the brain drain and the imminent end (from a project perspective) of the financial year.

Well I have residency already so no worries there. Not arriving until 2 October though.

Shall we have a sweep on how long it is until you get a job? I'll go for... 11 days. K? :)

hi Chibha,
Do these government agencies insist on a PR. Will a WTR constitute a legal right to work or seek work... ? Because it seems if you don't have a job offer then NZIS will most likely give a WTR !

Hi dugdug,
My prospective employer in Wellington (Ministry of Health) don't seem to care whether I have a PR, a WTR or a general working visa. All they want is good IT people.
A good web site for looking for IT jobs in NZ is http://www.seek.co.nz
Best of luck,
Ben

Hi
Is there much demand for ITIL (managers certification) jobs in Wellington.
Thanks

I am looking for an Operational Delivery Manager here in Auckland. I need someone who has excellent leadership skills with the ability to drive various teams from windows to Unix plus a service desk. Good IT knowledge would be an advantage but a first class work ethic is more important.
