You should probably read up on the gangs (Mongrel Mob and Black Power) before you dismiss areas to live. It's not always as in-your-face as you might think :no many people here in live areas that area supposedly gang ridden - a few of them posted on the link I provided, all giving their opinions which are more valuable to you than a programme dedicated to gangs :nice1

Been here just over 2 years; Only person I ever saw was some weedy looking character at Porirua swimming baths with a Mongrel Mob tattoo across his back playing with his kids

Don't have personal experience to share as we live in Auckland. Just wanted to say that its an ongoing series that Sky have been repeating. In fact the series with the Mongrel Mob episode in it was from Series 1 which first aired in 2006. I would therefore think that the actual filming was done quite some time ago.

These websites might help:

I'm with the Hulse on this one. I've lived in Welly for years and have never come across any gang fighting in the streets anywhere. It's really a bit of a non issue, occasionally you might see some patched gang members hanging out in a mall or McD's, but hardly ever. I wouldn'y worry about. I've got two small kids and I wouldn't live in the city if it crime was an issue here....

We live in Hawkes Bay and i believe i have heard of Mongrel Mob around parts of the Bay, but never heard of any violence as such ??

I was witness to one bloke coming in in his black leather jacket (Mongrel Mob logo on the back) whilst i was having a mammogram a few months ago, to the private Hospital. He was obviously looking for his partner and you could 'feel his presence' as he stood about 6ft tall with both arms placed on the reception desk trying to intimidate the receptionist. It didnt turn into a situation thankfully.

Dont know is anyone in Hawkes Bay has any further knowledge ?

There is a "gang element" where we live but it has so far had no impact on our daily lives what so ever. They are here but it really doesn't seem to intrude on daily life. At the end of the day the documentary is supposed to make money and TBH if you watch the whole series, NZ gangs are very tame compared to some around the world. Don't get me wrong I wouldn't like to meet some of them on a dark night! :uhoh :uhoh Really don't see it needs to be an issue in deciding to live over here.

i have lived in christchurch (quite a big gang problem down there at one stage but a lot of it was sorted, including the knocking of one of the HQs) and now live in wellington. never did i feel the effects of gangs. my aunty lived in linwood (chch) which has some very dodgy areas and to my knowledge, had no major problems.
i would be hard pushed to call that series a documentary to be completely honest. its interesting but there's never any insight gained about these gangs for me.

OH and I live in Auckland and never came across any gangs, and we have been here for close to 2 years and a half.

Although 3 days after arriving in NZ in 2005, we travelled down to Hamilton for one of OH's extended family functions at Valentine's, the family restaurant. There happened to be a few Mongrel Mob members dining in also with their families (including young kids). They were like anyone else in the restaurant, minding their own business, smiling and opening the door for an elderly couple who walked in behind them :laugh

If they didn't have their Mongrel Mob patches on, I wouldn't have picked up who they were, having read about that gang before coming here. But I must say they were quite physically impressive :exit

From what I can gather from afar these gangs are very similar to Hells Angels in how they work, which is that many of them are perfectly okay to you and I and some I am guessing may lead respectable lives also (the president I think he was/is, of Hells Angels England was/is a lawyer!). It is only when there is trouble brewing between different elements of gangs of different gangs that anything happens, but it is normally away from the spotlight as they don't need the authorities giving them too much trouble.

Just wanted to add my comments to this thread. I'm not yet in NZ and this is very out of date but when I first visited, mid 1990's just out of uni, I met a handful of Black Power members on the cargo ferry from Picton (caught it through necessity not choice!). I didn't really have a clue who they were and had no idea of the whole gang culture then but they were friendly enough to those of us on the ferry. Played guitar, sang and were genuinely interested in whether we were enjoying the country etc etc. Having said that we did refuse a ride once in Welly!!

Best thing I would recomend to you would be to come out here for a holiday, and suss the place out. A visit like that would not only reassure you about any gang related questions, but also help with any other questions generally about living here, be it housing, jobs, climate, transport issues, goods and services, political issues etc. Any amount of TV shows and reading on the net will give you only so much info. I know it's a long way to come for a reccy though from the UK but I would highly recomend it if it's do-able for you and your family.......

I'm sorry, but what's that supposed to say?

Anyone with a suit and tie is a good person?

Of all the lawyers I've met in my life there was only ONE that made a respectable impression on me.

Lawyers? Show me a bigger gang than that.
(Now that's worth a documentary! Ross?)

Can't disagree there John, okay what the masses perceive as a respectable person. By the way I ride motorcycles and have done since I was eighteen :p

Mongrel Mob and Black Power are throughout the north island from the top to the bottom (Kaitaia, Whangarei, Auckland, East Coast, Wellington ... and many places in between) and really aren't anything to bother about - although you probably wouldn't want to live next door to their local headquarters. There are more threatening gangs out there than them. Yes, they can be nasty but is mostly between themselves and other gang/motorbike clubs.

thought I better clarify my comment about more threatening gangs out there (I didn't mean in NZ ... I just meant in the world). The Ross Kemp show managed to find some extreme cases of their behaviour.... it isn't something you see very often (and most people would never see anything of them apart from cruising past in their cars or drinking in a hotel bar). Wellington is lovely
