ARGH! We are not a well family at the moment. I went to the doctor on Friday about what felt like a skin rash/excema on the hair line at the back of my neck. I'd had it for a while but then I discovered a marble sized lump which I wasn't sure or not if it was a lymph node. So he prescribes some stuff for the rash on my head, says its an enlarged lymph node thats fighting the infection and it should go down once the rash goes away.
Well all of yesterday the lymph node got bigger, the area of swelling got larger became very, very painful to the touch and red and I started having limited movement in my neck. I packed in the nurofen and panadol but it didn't help much (then again I'll happily admit that my pain threshold is useless :o ).
Anyway after a very disturbed night and a lot of tears I got our neighbour to take me to the 24hr emergency unit up the road. Well couldn't have my OH & son with his Shingles sitting in a doctors waiting room now could we!! The doc took one look and has diagnosed cellulitis and prescribed me some antibiotics and pain meds. The scary thing was that he said if it hadn't improved by tomorrow afternoon I'm to go see my GP again as there is a chance I might need introvenous antibiotics!!
There we were just making ends meet and a whole bunch of medical bills roll in - sigh! Still one little silver lining - son's Shingles is definitely improving and he is coping with it really, really well. Looks like starting the anit-viral meds early has made a huge difference.
I'm off to my bed...

Annelise, I really feel for you
My dad has cellulitis in his foot for the past couple of weeks and it's really red and swollen. He's been getting the anitbiotics intravenously - first a twice-daily injection at his home from the district nurse but since he's 75 and doesn't have the best foot circulation anyway, he's now in hospital having it tended to - but it has made a huge difference and is making a great improvement.
I'd say keep your chin up, but with swelling in the back of your neck you might not have much choice!
best wishes

Thanks everyone! Have had a good sleep and I think the swelling is going down already. Breathing a huge sigh of relief and hoping for a speedy recovery.

Its wonderful to know that there are a bunch of folks out in cyber space who care so THANKS hugely again everyone.

Thanks soooo much for the offer will bear it in mind if needed but we're quite well stocked up at the moment - phew!
Can I ask - does one of your wee ones go to the Kindy at the bottom of my road or do you have another reason for cruising my neighbourhood? :laugh

I do hope you are feeling better soon. My little girl had cellulitis in her knee a couple of years ago but once the anti b's kicked in it cleared up in a day or two! :)

Try alternating hot and cold (wet) packs to the area. 3 min very hot/1 min icy cold. Repeat total of three times (hot/cold/hot/cold/hot/cold) 2-3X/day. Increases circulation to the area as well as white blood cell counts where ever these hydroptherapy packs are applied.
Good luck!

Thanks for this tip. I had been using just a cold pack so will try alternating and see if that helps. The swelling has certainly gone down a lot so I'm hopeful I'm on the mend.
