Firstly, I assume that we can vote in UK elections? We don't have PR yet... could we vote even if we did.. and if so, how do we go about it?
My mum rang today begging us to use our vote so that Labour don't get in again, but quite frankly I don't see a viable alternative.. :no

I did think of voting for tony just to annoy the british people knowing I would not be subject to his tierany. Though I couldn't do it to my fellow royal subjects. If you dont live in the UK then you wont be on the electrol register, I suppose its illegal to say you live at your parents if you don't and can you post vote. I know those in the services can.
but as you say what is alternative,
But once were gone will we care.

To be honest I hadn't even THOUGHT about the UK elections until my mum mentioned it - I even had to ask when it was!! I do still have a property in the UK, albeit rented out, that any UK tax stuff/revenue stuff goes to and gets redirected but assume my tenant would have registered there.. I thought that if you were out of the country you could get an absentee vote or something??
And as for caring when here... another good point.. I'm not sure I do care but again, haven;t given this much thought... almost nicer to be ignorant of the news back there although I occasionally grab a copy of the UK newspaper here ($$$$ !!!) but get so depressed it goes in bin quite rapidly!

sound like you found a cure for homesickness there moorf
a poster sized print of tony and his cronies, maybe even a page 3 spread with robin cook.
that would cure it.

Hi Guys,
When I spoke to the council I'm sure they said I could arrange a postal vote whilst I was still a citizen. Just because you're not living in the country doesn't mean you can't vote - so long as you register your address in NZ with them.

I'm sure you can vote, if you are a UK citizen. I would imagine the british embassy could tell you how to.

Found this... which essentially says yes, you can vote, but not in local government elections... funny as I couldn't find it before! :?
To vote in UK elections your name must appear on the electoral register. Once registered as an overseas elector you will be able to vote in Parliamentary elections and European elections in the UK but not in local government elections.
The electoral register is compiled by each local authority. To register you should contact the electoral registration officer at the local council where you last registered when living in the UK or if you left the UK before you were old enough to register the electoral registration officer for the area where you last lived. They will send you the forms.
You can find contact details for your local council by visiting www.upmystreet.co.uk and entering the postcode of your last UK address.
Overseas electors are eligible to register for up to 15 years after they were last registered. The Register of Electors is updated every month. You can return your application form at any time but the electoral registration office must receive the form within 3 months of your signing and dating it.
You will need to register each year. The electoral registration office should send you a reminder 2-3 months before your registration expires. With your registration form you will also be sent information on proxy and postal voting.
