Did anyone here attend last year's Nz Expo in London and if so was it beneficial?
Have looked at their website and it looks absolutely manic. Also wondered whether the seminars are actually worth attending or whether they just state the obvious (whatever that is).

Hi Poacher,
we went last year and found it a waste of time. If you're just starting out and have little knowledge about all the things you need to know, then maybe it's beneficial. We went to see if there were any employers and/or agents interested in an IT person, and contrary to what it had said on the website, there were only a couple and they were more or less not interested. These days things are of course different, they're more in need of immigrants, so maybe there'd be more interest. Also depends, of course, on what field you're in. Nurses would have found it great, some even got interviews then and there.

Thanks Nisse,
Could always dress hubby up in nurses uniform. Its skilled trades we're interested in. He had 18 years as Gas Fitter and last 2 years as (stressed) primary school teacher which NZ has a surplus of.
We were hoping there would be some stands that represented plumbing/gas fitting as that is what he's just gone back to doing.

We have a friend who went to the Expo last year, he is a stainless steel welder. There is a shortage of welders in NZ and he got offered 2 jobs there and then. Now he works in Blenheim, the lucky so and so!! :clap
I suppose it depends which field you're in, and you probably won't be able to tell until you get there! :?
Cheers,
Mark. :D

Hi, poacher,
I can't give you any indication as to pay scales and the like, but gas fitters and fitters of all kinds are in enormous demand in NZ. You might want to keep an eye on this website: http://jobstuff.co.nz/006c72b37d4e0c25/
I see lots of pipe and gas fitters sought. They don't seem able to fill plumbing and pipe/gas fitting positions fast enough.
Hope this is useful to you!! - Rae

We went to the expo last year and it was incredibly crowded. There are things you can pick up on there but if you go don't take the kids as it really was a case of pushing through the crowds.

Veronica,
Did you go on a Saturday or Sunday. Trying to work out which day will be the quietest.

Hello frances,
18 years? Is he CORGI registered?
18 years experience with no CORGI - good chances.
18 years with CORGI - simply cannot fail
I have a mate with his own business here in the UK who is considering setting up in Christchurch. He's also been to NZ with perm. residency before.
PM me if you want to talk to him, and I'll ask him if he doen't mind talking to you. ( I can't give details before asking him !! lol )
Regards, Caven

Hello veronica,
I believe he is looking at setting up with a view to installing under-floor heating, he seems optimistic about the prospects. I also forgot to mention he's a plumber by trade, but as you'll know plumbing and gas fitting are more or less the same trade.
