Spotted that Foodtown in Browns Bay are doing 2 loaves for $5 or $6 (sorry can't quite remember) today.

Leeks are $1.49 each (they were big) but I've no idea if that is a good price or not as I'm still getting my head around what is in season when! :o

I think leeks must be just about coming in. They usually hover around $1.99 but go down to 99c in season.

Foodtown had a good one earlier in the week where the 1kg block of Mainland Mild Tasty cheese was cheaper than the 750g one, still cost about $10.00 though!!

Also watch out in Foodtown, Browns Bay if you purchase pears - the last 3 times they've tried to charge me $5.78 per kg when I have specifically chosen the ones that were cheapest which is usually somewhere around the $2.00 per kg mark. Naughty, naughty Foodtown!

Foodtown in Brown's Bay also regularly stick the wrong labels on their croissants....charging you for 12 pack when you are getting a pack of 4  Now get them from the nice man at the french bakery....who will give away free leftover doughnuts if you are there when he is closing up for the night :)

Mmmm too much chocolate.

I've noticed so far prices seem to jump up and down alot. Also the supermarkets here don't go in for BOGOFs that were so prevalent at the local Morrisons.

These prices are really cheap in comparison to uk:(
Apples here are around £1.30 kg in asda
Carrots are around £1.00 per kg bag
Peppers are £1.28 for three
The UK seems really expensive to NZ prices cannot wait until we migrate!
I understand that these may be on offer in the supermarkets and it is probably swings and roundabouts but these prices are cheaper than I can get wholesale in costcos.

It will seem cheap if you are on the same wages. However, many people take a 30/40% paycut when they come to NZ, so then things don't seem so cheap.

Simple currency conversion is never enough when comparing the cost of living, its more important to look at your grocery costs as a percentage of your take home pay.

You can find bargains in NZ and NZ offers many wonderful things, but very few people would consider it cheap. Hence the thread in the first place....

I hope that I haven't offended you!;)
I was not simply making a currency conversion I was simply attempting to show the diffrence in prices to NZ.
The cost of living in the UK has gone up by about 20% in the last two months or so, my food bill has gone up by an unbelievable amount without any increase in incomes. The prices that were given as I stated is aprox 50-60% less than what I can buy wholesale.
As I said I understand about wages in NZ and it must also be swings and roundabouts with the prices I was just making a comparison for those who may not realise how much prices have increased lately in the UK.
Sorry for any misunderstanding and not wanting to hijack this excellent thread( not only for people in NZ but also for us here in the UK looking to migrate this year) I will leave it there.
Hope this thread keeps going as its and excellent reference tool!

I haven't been using Raewards for too long - about 6 months - but I love it there now, took a while to go shopping in a store that doesn't have "everything" , i.e. it concentrates on fruit and veg, but when I realised that I don't buy pre-made sauces or food here it's been perfect.

They do large bags of frozen brocc and cauli florets which are dead cheap and tasty, plus great specials - although my aubergine (yes ONE AUBERGINE) priced at $5.60 was a bit gut-wrenching - but when you've got a craving for moussaka what can you do?? :D

We use the Raeward Fresh by the airport but there are a couple more around Chch - do you have them in the North Island?

TBH I buy it because it's not made from concentrate, rather than any difference in taste. When it's not on special, there's another cheaper brand ('Premium' I think) I buy. I think there's only the choice of two though :(
