Hi,
I've been reading some of the stories about people migrating to NZ and being shocked by the amount of holiday entitlement they get per year compared to the UK. Only 15 days???? Surely not!!
Is this all across the board? Or do different jobs vary?
More importantly, does anyone know how many weeks/days/hours that a nurse gets off for holiday in a year?

Standard holiday entitlement is 20 days and gather that is across the board. Think there are about 12 (?) public holidays on top of that. My OH tried to negotiate more holiday leave as he had loads as he'd worked in NHS for donkeys years but was only given 2 extra days...:( Bit of a pain really as he had around 35 in the UK and it really helps during school holidays etc..

As Karen says, nurses in NZ are entitled to 4 weeks holiday + statutory days. You do also get sick leave and domestic sick leave as well if needed.

Holiday entitlement for everyone in NZ was increased recently.

Hi Guys

The basic holiday for nurses is 4 weeks plus a week of shift leave on your first anniversary ie 5 weeks after 1 year. After 5 years the basic leave entitlement goes up to 5 weeks Plus 10 public holidays plus 1 local 'anniversary day' which varies according to the region that you live in ie ours will be Nov 14th because we are in Canterbury.

For example

Nurse Year one - 4 weeks leave plus 11 public days
Nurse Year two - 4 weeks leave plus 1 week shift leave plus 11 PH

Nurse year six - 5 weeks leave plus 1 week shift leave plus 11 PH

Sick leave is 10 days and then there are an additional 10 days which are discretionary (like compassionate leave) These days can be accumulated over a number of years to a maximum of 260 days.

This was all agreed in the recent negotiations and MECA agreements.

Hope this helps

Out of interest there are two different MECAs, one for the PSA and the other for NZNO

Which one are you listing the details for, are they both the same regarding holidays, and if not does anyone have the other unions holiday entitlement details?

What do they class as 'shift leave'? Do you have to work a set number of unsocial hours?
