Rentals in Albany

Hi, I am desperately trying to sort accommodation out. We are arriving on the 8th May.
I think I will book a motel in Albany for about 7/8 nights and look for rentals (3 Beds) in Albany from there. Is this a good idea? Is this enough time to find a rental in the area and move in ?

I am looking at staying in the Albany oak Motel. Has anyone else stayed here? Recommended?, It is quite expensive but I do not have much other options.

Your replies will be most welcome.

Thanks,
Lisa and Paul

There are plenty of rentals in Albany, but unless you have contacts with rental agencies etc so you are ready to start viewing properies right away, I would think 2 weeks is more realistic. Remember they will still need to collect references for you etc, and if this requires them contacting people in UK, it could take a few days. On the plus side, you shouldn't have too much problem finding a decent rental in the area...alot of modern houses from 1 bed apartments up to 6 bed mansions.

Bring your references with you.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like I will need to extend out stay in the motel http://www.emigratenz.org/forum/images/smilies/no.gif

With regard to references I do not have any. How do I go about getting a reference?
I need to do this very quickly as will be going out in just over 3 weeks !

Thanks,
Paul

The references need to show you are a good prospect as a tenant - that you're likely to pay your rent promptly and won't wreck the joint.

You just ask suitable people to give you a letter you can show to a prospective landlord, saying good things about you, and that they'd be happy to answer any further questions. The kind of people to ask are

- any landlord you've rented from in the past, and parted from on good terms

- any official-type person (teacher, employer) to say how long they've known you and that you're of good character

- any business you've dealt with regularly, to say you've always settled your bills quickly

- (if you have a job lined up - sorry, I can't remember while typing this) your new employer to say you have a job with them.

We rented without any problems and we didn't have any references to bring with us and weren't asked for them either. We did go through a rental agent if that makes a difference.

We did get asked for references, and although we had some with us, they wanted to get their own anyway(in case ours were fakes etc) so we just had to provide contact details. Wasn't a problem but it did take a few days due to the time difference.
