Well my wife and me have been reading these forums for the past couple of months and the more we read the more we dream. We're coming to NZ during the summer for a recce and to meet up with family members who are already out there. We have two children and one puppy and i know which of these will be the more expensive to move out to NZ if we do decide to go.

At the moment i'm coming to the end of nurse training and want to get some experience in the UK before making the move. I just need to get a job at the end of training . Working will be so hard again after being a student for three years.

We're looking at Hawke's Bay as it ticked all the boxes we had although it's easy for a place to look good from half a world away. Hopefully our trip in the summer will either make or break our viewpoint.

Anyway just thought i'd introduce us to the rest of you kind and friendly people.:cheers :cheers

Hi there

Just to say welcome to the forum, and the rollercoaster ride ahead! Can I ask, what kind of nursing are you doing? You shouldn't have any problems finding work. The process can take a while but as you say, you would like to get some experience 1st which will be better for your application!

Good luck with everything

I'm doing Adult nursing. When i qualify in the summer i want to work in either a respiratory medical or thoracic surgical ward but a lot depends on what i get offered. Being a 30 something male student i stand out a bit in all of my placements and as far as i know i've stood out for a good reason.

Well that's gotta be a good thing! I'm sure you'll have no problem finding work in NZ. I know you're not really looking yet as such but here are a few sites that may be of interest!? These in particular will give you an idea of the requirements re: working in NZ.....registration and immigration wise!

http://www.immigration.govt.nz/
http://www.nursingcouncil.org.nz/

Also this should give you an idea of what sort of jobs are available in the Hawkes Bay area.....

http://www.hawkesbaydhb.govt.nz/

There are several DHB's (District Health Boards), all of which advertise heaps of nursing jobs!

Once again.....good luck

Thanks for the links, any information is always gladly accepted. How did you find the NZ registration process other than lengthy?

I think mine took a little longer than average...countless problems with references! I sorted and sent all the info, application and payment. The Uni transcript request and NMC Verification of Registration got there ok too tho I know that some people have had problems. Like I say, unbeknown to me, references hadn't been received. As soon as I found out, I chased referees up to resend and rang or emailed the NZNC weekly/fortnightly to see how things were coming along. They received my final piece of paperwork on the 11th March and I got my certificate etc 3weeks later.

On the whole they were really quite helpful, I found more so if you actually spoke to them. I would highly recommend that you chase regularly, the process shouldn't take as long as mine then as you can keep on top of progress and address any issues as soon as they arise!

Welcome to the forum, good to have another nurse. Like you I did not qualify until i was 35, now I have had a great job offer in the South Island. One tip, get your NZ reg asap, because NZ DHBs take you far more seriously if you have it and it can take up to 4 months.

A lot depends on what we find when we visit NZ in the summer. If we like it then i can start the process for registration straight away and start tackling the million and one other things that would need to be sorted.

Hi
This is the first time i have used the forum other than to introduce ourselves. hoping I get my comments in the right place (forgive me if I don't!). I would be interested to hear any advise or comments on the process of registering with the new zealand nursing council. It seems a long drawn out process and as I said in my introduction it is already doing my head in!!

The naive side of me just thought that NCNZ would see my registration details on my NMC statement of entry and it would be done in a zap! However, I completely agree checking is the only way to ensure they don't end up with a Beverley Allett in New Zealand!

It is the process of getting evidence from uni and previous employers that is driving me mad for our EOI. The people in human resources have got no insight into the anguish they cause when the can't find records of employment or can't be bothered and also when they say they will send the stuff either it fails to arrive or the dates and info are all wrong - Grrrrrrrrrrrrr! Our emigration consultant told me to write to the inland revenue and ask for evidence of my national insurance contributions as that will give an accurate account of hours worked etc. Does anyone have any other ideas were info can be obtained just in case it goes pear shaped?

Just one thing I have realised that may interest other nurses and midwives. If you are a midwife that did the shortened course (eg already and RGN and then trained to be midwife) you will have done the midwifery training on the back of your nurse registration. When you are gathering evidence of experience don't sell yourself short and put it down as just a student midwife (they don't count any time spent as a student) because if you are already a RGN then you need to put something like RGN seconded onto midwifery training. otherwise you could lose that time on your RGN experience. obviously some student midwives will be direct entry and can't do that, don't sell yourself short. That time spent as a RGN training to be a midwife could mean the difference between getting extra points for experience or not. Also, people who have trained as health visitors can do the same, you have to be a RGN to do the degree and you could end up losing the 12 months of the training as a HV by stating student HV.

hope this is clear (more so to nurses & midwives I hope). please excuse me if i have put this in someones thread and made a mess of it!

This isn't exactly the same experience, but may have a bearing. When I've needed to get a reference from past employers, particularly after a lapse of time, I've written to them pretty much telling them exactly what I'd like them to say, e.g., 'You will find in your records that I worked as xyz from this date to that date. During that time, as well as my basic responsibilities as blah-di-blah, I was in charge of a, b and c projects, and I was particularly pleased with the results of thingummy, when the overall outcome was whatsit and we received congratulations from whoziz.' Most times they have indeed just turned round what I've told them into the third person.

I imagine it would have to help if you can contact someone in the registry at the various places that have to confirm your record, so they at least know the enquiry is going to arrive, and when you were with them.

Welcome and good luck.

We originally liked the look of Hawkes Bay, however we have now settled in the Waikato, really nice too. I'm sure wherever you do decide to go you will find it to be vastly different to UK.
