Hopefully (*fingers and toes crossed*) I’ll be headed to NZ sometime soon. Because of the US housing market, however, I think the best choice would be to rent out my house (furnished) and flatting in NZ for some time. Plus I don’t know if NZ is going to be a permanent move for me yet.

To make a long story short, I’m not hiring a container and essentially moving across the world with a suitcase. Well, not just a suitcase, but you get the idea. All the worldly goods I could possibly want (bedding and dishes, mostly), as long as they fit into a couple of boxes. I’ve looked into every option I could find as far as cost to send a couple extra boxes and the cheapest I’ve found was Qantas excess baggage!

It looks like it would be $176 USD for two, 70LB boxes on Qantas ($350 on Air New Zealand (for 50lbs), $378 on UPS, $500ish for fedex, usps, and a couple different international shippers I found)

Has anyone used the Qantas excess baggage option successfully? I called them to verify their rates, and make sure that it was unlimited and not restricted to Qantas club members, but I’m a bit of a Nervous Nellie.

Ummm... Excess baggage from the US to NZ with Air NZ is $80 a piece. Which doesn't include the two pieces you already get. I'm not sure where you're getting your numbers from. Make sure you're not looking at cargo because I know you are not allowed to ship items as cargo with AirNZ out of the USA. FedEx and UPS will not ship to NZ. I already tried that. USPS (besides moving companies) is the only way to get your items to NZ other than excess baggage.

For Fedex and UPS, I just used their online estimator, which let you put NZ in as a destination, but didn't try to take items to Fedex to ship, so maybe they have a different answer there.... I do remember that one of the things I tried was a cargo forwarder, but they used fedex to do their shipping.

As far as AirNZ, I swear that it used to be $175 per bag. I went through every airline that goes from LAX to NZ, looked up their charges online, and charted the cost, weight, and baggage allowable size (queen of Excel spreadsheets here), but this was several months ago now. Maybe it's changed?

Perhaps it's changed. I know I've called both UPS and FedEx and they REFUSE to accept shipments to NZ. (I know I tried to finagle it however I could).

This article on Air New Zealand may be of interest. I would not consider flying with them if they bring this into force.

Isn't this for DOMESTIC flights, though - i.e. within NZ?

It does say it's for domestic flights. And if you're flying internationally AirNZ allows you the long haul flight baggage allowance even on the connecting domestic flights.
