Looking at the option of perhaps taking a work permit as a short term measure however have been warned that I might be liable for tax if we import some household goods.

Is this true / accurate? If so - on what goods would we be taxed? I realise that if we wanted to import a car, then tax is due (apart from the fact that importing a car seems to be very messy, especially on something like mine that is a bit older and 'semi classic' ..... ).

Looking at the revenue site at the moment - not finding details apart from PAYE for non resident etc.

It's GST that's payable. I'll see if I can find a thread where this has been tackled.

Here's one. http://www.emigratenz.org/forum/showthread.php?t=15539

And if you do a Search, you'll find the procedure involved in importing cars has been discussed many times, too.
