Hi everyone,

Was just wandering if there is somebody out there who would be able to tell me which of the two places they prefered and why?

It looks like my OH is going to be offered positions in these places :raebanana . I am leaning towards Hawkes Bay as is the closest climate to where I am currently. Also would like to know what areas are the best as far as schooling and safety goes.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Obvious stuff first: Wellington = Bigger city, more people, less space
Hawke's Bay = Small population, more space, only one city and it's more like a town (Napier)

Wellington is very safe for a decent size city, IMO.

In terms of climate, Wellington would be a long way from what you're used to. HB also would be cooler. Daytime highs average about 25C in summer and 14C in winter throughout that region.

Plenty of HB residents on the forum who will surely help you out more :)

HI

We live in Hawkes Bay and its lovely!

We also had the choice of Wellington or Auckland, but as we were not used to big cities, we opted for HB, as well as the lovely climate.

Hastings is where we are based which is a fair size, not exactly huge, and there is also Napier about 15min drive away.

The scenery here is fabulous, vineyards everywhere, beautiful landscape, mountains, its gorgeous!

There are loads of schools to choose from also.

If i can help further, please dont hesitate to ask.

Thanks for all the info!!

Was wondering what area around hastings would be the best for Primary schools?

And I would also like to know how cold is the coldest night in Winter for Hawke's bay? I am used to a bad winter night being at the absolute coldest 10C.

Thanks again

Man.... a winter lowest of 10C? Try an AVERAGE of 0C to -5C in January in Dayton, Ohio! And we consider it lucky to get as high as 0C at day or night in winter. =BRRRRRrr!=

( Yet another reason I wanna move further south! ;) )

Personally i didnt find the winter as cold as i thought it would be last year. Did wear my winter coat but only for few weeks if that. It seems to be a different kind of coldness if you get my meaning.

What i found strange was, you can get up in the morning, its cold, you look at the mountains and they are full of snow, and by lunchtime the sun is out!

Strange but true.

I am a real freezer but didnt find it as cold as UK winters...........

Hi

We live off the centre of Hastings and there are quite a few primary schools available.

Our son goes to Frimley (you can look online if want) and it has won many awards, its a brilliant school, staff are excellent, and we have found our son to be doing extremely well.

As for cold - i just replied to Livi's query - although its cold, its not so cold as UK winters.

Please feel free to PM me if i can help you further, or if you want to have look at my blog to give you an idea of what Hawkes Bay is like. I have kept it private as have had few probs in past.

Looking at Napier, the *average* overnight minimum throughout winter is 5C. So reasonably you could expect 0C-10C depending on conditions.
On a handful of occasions during winter, HB will hit 20C during daytime, that would be in NW conditions. Otherwise, in winter you can expect temps in the mid teens and a decent amount of sun.

We are thinking of Hawke's Bay and are heading over in June for a recce. Is it practical to live in Napier and commute to Hastings hospital for work? i know it's not far but what are the roads like?

Thanks

Stevie,
It is possible to commute that distance, it would take about 20 minutes. The good thing about NZ is that no matter what time of the day you set off to work, it will still take you 20 minutes!!

My hubby commutes to Hastings each day, no problems!

I live a little north of Napier and commute to Waipukurua each day which is an hour, but the roads are so quite ( compared to UK) and the scenery is so stunning..the hour flies by!

Hi Stevie

Yes the commute wont take you long at all, about 20mins or so.

I work at the Hospital, and loads of people come in from Napier. There are a few different routes you can take also.

Mmm. I'd be interested to know the answer to this too. Is the main hospital around there in Hastings or Napier??
