Can anyone tell me what length of shift NZ nurses tend to work. The hospital i'm attached to favours 12.5 hour shifts which has the bonus of 3 shifts a week with the occasional extra shift to make up the shortfall in hours worked. Do NZ hospitals work on a similar system or do they work shorter shifts?

Generally the hospitals work a shorter 8 hour shift with 4 days on and 2 off.

When this was discussed a while ago (you could try a search?), it was said that some offer both the 8 hour or the longer 12 hour shift not sure if its down to nurse speciality or hospital?

Might be worth asking for specific hospital details and speciality?

My OH used to do the 12 hour shifts in UK but doesn't know how she coped with them now that she is doing 8 hour shifts!

cheers for the speedy reply.

I think effects of the long shifts are a gradual thing and you don't realise how tiring they are until you get a break from them. The obvious bonus to the long shifts is the way you work for fewer days than you work:raebanana .

Clare does the long 12 hour shifts and we love them as we get loads of time to enjoy ourselves, she's just coming to the end of 6 days off which is cool :clap :clap

I'm also interested in finding out about nursing shifts ... apart from the time of shifts, I've seen ads that refer to morning and afternoon shifts - can anyone tell me when these types of shifts start and end?

benandclare, I am astounded at the speed of your process ... that must be some kind of record?!?! I'm a South African RN, currently waiting for the NZNC to process my registration ... going to probably apply for a work permit and PR at the same time as I have heard that PR can take a long, long time ...and we'd like to be there as early next year as possible so my daughter can start school at the beginning of the school year, hopefully!

Here, you can do 8, 10 or 12 hour shifts. Morning shifts can start at 7 or 8, afternoons at 12 or 1. A big variation in other words.
Elleann, you'll get PR very quickly with a job offer.

I think that the variation may be bigger than that :yes

My OH starts a morning shift at 7:00am and an afternoon shift at 2:30pm

Where I been offered a job they do 8 hour shifts 07.00-15.30 14.45-23.00 and 22.45-07.00.I did ask about 12 hour shifts as that what I currently do and its easier on child care but thet said no, but will do their best to support us with shifts around the kids when we arrive.

It took 3 months for Clare to get her reg and she started that in Jan 2007 and we didn't submit our EOI til Clare had a job offer. We had all the paperwork lined up and ready as we were sure we'd be processed in under 3 months, yeah it happpened too.

We didn't use an agency, applied directly to the CHB for the position advertised and like wise didn't use immigration agent, all our own work :nice1
