Hey guys, we are thinking of moving to Whangarei, Dargaville or up to Kaitaia. As far north as possible. Love to hear more about what you think of your local areas and if you have children how you find the local schools and what you guys get up to at weekends etc.

We are looking to buy several acres of land and hopefully a 3 bedroom house. We eventually want to become 80 – 90% self-sufficient both with our own produce and eventually 100% self-sufficient with electricity, water and sewage.

Do you guys grow your own produce and if so what? Any of you following a permaculture lifestyle?

Living rurally I am already 100% self sufficient with water and sewerage (along with most of my neighbours) cos the council doesn't run those services out to rural areas. There are some holiday homes around that use generators or solar for their electricity cos the the cost of having the cable run to the house site is exorbitant. Many people don't use alot of sprays in their gardens simply because they don't bother making one (garden), and the livestock eat the grass down on the rest of the property.
