I am moving out to Auckland on May 6th.
Is it worth getting travel insurance ? Can you get it if you are emigrating?

Hi

Yes you can and you probably should get it if you can as all the usual problems like falling ill and being unable to travel, issues with planes being delayed etc can still happen even if you're only going one way...

I believe that the Post Office offer a travel insurance for people emigrating and I've heard the do a good rate on it...

Hope this helps and good luck....

Yep post office worked for us. You can basically pay for as many days as you think you'll need - think we did it for just over two weeks just to make sure everything went okay. I'm trying to remember cost and think it was around £85 for family of four for basic cover and very easy to organise - did it on the day we flew out (or maybe day before) on the phone :)

I bought one months travel insurance online. We're stopping in Singapore/Malaysia on the way so I wanted to be covered for that and our first two weeks in NZ. Most online sites let you stipulate how long it is for. Ours is for 30 days. I think we bought backpacker insurance with extra baggage cover just so we and our bags get to NZ safely and are covered while we stop over as well .

It's peace of mind more than anything when you're taking such a big step.

Be careful though! Most insurance companies will only cover if you still have a permanent address in the country where you took out the insurance.
Would be a real bummer if your claim is denied for that reason ...

Yep good point we still had address cos we hadn't sold house - have now though :clap :clap There are specific companies that do insure for emigration purposes and this has been discussed before on this forum so I'd go for the search facility and check it out.
