I am looking at moving to NZ when I have achieved a full pension at my current employer (in Canada). My wife will be 54 when this happens. She is a highschool teacher, which is on the NZ long term skilled labour shortage list. If my wife can get a job as a teacher once I retire (and we qualify for entry), and works one school year, what are the chances that we will be able to stay? Ideally I would we would like to see her work as short a period as possible. The ultimate goal is retirement in NZ.

I'm not sure I completely understand your question, so hope my thoughts are helpful.

Being allowed to stay is not related to how long you have worked in NZ. In order to get a work permit or permanant residence you have to file an application with all relevant details such as work history, medical certificate, police clearance certificate etc. I think the process is a little easier if you only apply for a one year visa (this doesn't involve a medical certificate, but you also dont get medical coverage in NZ) Is this what you are thinking of doing? But if you are applying for residence, then I am not aware of any criteria that says you have to work when you get here if you dont need to. Unless you needed that job offer in order to have enough points to qualify.

Another point to consider is that you have to apply before you are 55. If you apply for entry based on your OH's teaching experience, does this give you enough points to qualify for residence? They won't take your PR away from you if your OH quits working. ( I assume you would have enough pension to live on without burdening the state?...especially with the exchange rate between the NZ and Cdn dollar:nice1 )
is this of any help?

I think you answered my question. I'll explain a bit further to make sure.

Since we can't simply immigrate to NZ as retirees (we don't score enough points) the only other way seems to be through employment. If we can gain entry through my wife's employement, I am wondering what the minimum time is that she would have to work? My assumption is that if you gain enough points through ones employment, then you can't just quit within a short period of time and expect to stay. Or am I wrong?

We would be totally self sufficient for income and have no health concerns. Having said that, we would like to qualify for NZ medical.

Does this help you understand the question?

Well hopefully someone else on the forum will jump in with the answer, but I always thought you could quite a job and move on to another, or not work or whatever, once you have those blue stickers.

anyone else have a thought on this?

I'm also of the same opinion that it is really up to the resident on how they support themselves and if you are already self sufficient then I can't see that being a problem.

It should be noted that you may get a section 18A condition attached to your PR in which case you must get this condition removed before you are free to do as you please.

Normally a section 18A would be to stay in the same job for 3 months after which time you get the condition removed, but it is possible for them to apply different conditions.

If you get a PR then you are entitled to the same health care as any other NZ resident.
