So my house sale is well underway (not over until it's over..but still!) and we're making further plans.
The biggest problem is that we are tied to our dog's schedules for travel.:no
We have until September before we have to renew the dogs medical work so are trying to make some plans.
My husband has a few job offers but doesn't feel right about accepting one for only a few months before we go.
I had given notice at my job a long time previously in anticipation of our house selling in time (which it didn't!), so my job is over as well.
So we don't have much tying us here unless we decide to stay for a few months.

One of our current thoughts is to go after the house sells and leave the dogs with family and send for them later once we are settled and have found a place to live that accepts pets.
One of the key problems in bringing them right away is that we don't know how difficult it will be to locate housing that will accept pets. We'd only have a month to locate something while the dogs are in quarantine.

We'll be starting out in Auckland, but may relocate to Wellington if a job offer comes from there.
Anyone have insight into how difficult it is to find housing that accepts animals in those areas? I think that's the biggest worry. :(

We were in the same situation. What we did was board the dogs at Golden Arrow for two weeks before they were due to fly out. That meant that we had a week to finish off goodbyes etc and then a week to settle here before they arrived. We salved our consciences by telling ourselves that they would be better off with a routine (even though it wasn't their normal routine) than the chaos of those last few days. Treat it like a holiday.

And going to the airport to pick them up was wonderful. It's surprising how much you can achieve in your first week here - including finding somewhere to live. It's like time stands still. I'd recommend it to anyone bringing their dog.

We didn't have a problem finding a rental in Wellington that would take a dog but it is only a small dog and we may have been lucky?

Did try to get the timings right but took us a week longer than anticipated to get the keys to the rental, so the dog had to go into kennels for a week (didn't need quarantine).

Not the best option but at least it is an option for you, should things take longer than anticipated.

our dog will not need quarantine however I think leaving with a family or putting into kennels whilst you get used to the new place and find rental is what we will do . its a shame I can not do the same with the kids ? ! ?
I did not say that really ?!? its just that the dog is like our fourth child but you can leave him home alone
