Whilst everyone was watching the balloons doing their funky stuff next to the lake at 06:30 the Pukeko's were happily going about their business, oblivious to the giant sacks of hot air floating above them.
Had to snap these two.

We used to have a couple of resident ones at school - the kids used to feed them their lunches.
:laugh
I was horrified to find out the local farmers considered them as pests!

Aaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh the baby is so cute :)
I see them almost every other week in the ponds when sampling but have to say they are not the cleverest birds as one of them flew in to a tree and fell down a couple months ago:laugh .

Pukekos are evil!! Don't let them fool you by looking so cute and innocent! Have you seen the beaks on them? While running round Hamilton lake I've been chased by them on several occasions - they're like roadrunner with their legs coming up almost in circles. I got chased a good 100m by one once - I've never sprinted so fast in my life! What made it all the more humiliating was round the other side of the lake there was a toddler chasing a pukeko - I admit I was a little ashamed at my terror.
