Hello everyone. Just clicked on this great forum and wish I found it earlier... I am expecting my PR stickers in a couple of weeks, after the usual rollercoasterish processing time of nine months. Looking forward to getting back to NZ and starting my new life in may!

And where am I going to live? Loved the helpful suburb guides here and would be grateful if the seasoned forum members could share some of their experience with me.

I am going to work / enrol for a postgrad study at the University of Auckland. The idea is to get to uni by bicyle or train / bus if it rains. I am looking for a unfurnished 1 bedroom unit or (granny) flat in central, south or east Auckland as I have friends living in the south of the city. Best for studying and relaxing would be a peaceful home in a quiet neighbourhood, and as I like running, the icing on the cake would be a park or beach around the corner. Rent maybe up to $250/300 per week. Realistic, crazy, way out?

So which areas would you recommend me to check out first?
Would it be common in NZ that you get a lower rent when you do regular handy work for the landlord (maintaining the garden, sitting the house etc.).

Thanks heaps for all your tips, comments, advice ...

hello.

the amount you've quoted doesn't seem too wauy out based on the stuff I've seen on trade-me, but I'm not 'on the ground' yet - good luck :)

Well, we certainly live in 'quiet'... or sleepy, or peaceful...

We live in Glendowie, and I know my OH cycled to uni when living here back then and attending the University of Auckland. There's beach, there's park, there's a bus, oh, and did I mention it, it is quiet :)

After living in a shack in Howick for the past 2 years, I've decided to move closer to the city and am currently looking for a house to rent in or around One Tree Hill. But I'm looking for a flatmate as I want to live in a nice, warm house, and cannot afford it on my own. I'm a professional female and I have 2 friendly indoor dogs. I can pay as much as $260/week and would prefer to live with only one other person.

If you're looking for a flatmate in the area, or know of anyone looking to move to the area, please PM me.

Thanks!!

Hi. My OH went to Auckland Uni. He rented in Parnell and cycled/ walked to the university. Leafy, quiet and very central. Possibly a tad too expensive for your budget . Worth considering.
