Just to check....
I wanted to make sure that when we apply (EOI) we do so with the correct lead applicant as we aren't using a migration agent (tight budget!).
If light of your experiences, can anyone give advice on which of us should be lead:

Myself - Lecturer, Foundation Degree/PGCE with 3 years experience.

OH - Car Parts Advisor, 5 years experience and newly trained Level 2 mechanic (but no practical experience yet or higher qualifications).

I'm only asking becausing looking at jobs sites he does seem the more employable of the two and wondered if this would affect things.
I did complete the initial immigration assessment with me as lead but unsure if that will still be ok for EOI?
Also, I am correct that the points needed to be selected are gained from lead applicant and not both?

Thanks. :)

the partner may add some points, but most of the points are based on the main applicant age/qualifications and work experience

you can (and should) do the points calculator for both of you as main applicant, see which one comes out with more - this initial assessment has no bearing on your EOI, which is the first formal point of application...

I know it is a bit long winded but if you are unsure as to how accurate the points indicatior is you could complete an online EOI as it calculates your points as you go along. You can also change things at any time. This could give you a better indication of your points for each. As long as you don't click 'submit' you will be ok. My draft EOI was filled out and adjusted numerous times until I was ready to submit.

Thanks for that, have just started to complete the online EOI.
It's a bit of a marathon!
A real pain I've discovered is that my qualifications aren't listed on the bog standard list and therefore to find out points for them I need to have them assessed. Never rains.....

Thanks for the advice.:)

Hi,
I am not sure how well the foundation degree will be assessed. In terms of teaching I think that the PGCE has also been a problem for some people - best to have a search through previous posts.
What job do you want to do when you get the NZ?

In terms of of the skills shortage list I think that the requirement for Lecturer is an Msc or Phd.

cheers

Hi Renew

I'm currently a lecturer at an agricultural college, so I think for NZ that's more vocational/tertiary/polytech, rather than uni, I have no plans to be a uni teacher!
However, I'm hoping that my qualifications would help with points, but to be honest I'd really want to go into conservation/outdoor education/tourism as I'm fed up with marking papers!

So as for possible jobs, I'm open to suggestions! :nice1

Hiya,
I know where you are coming from - students....Anyway best of luck. In terms of point and EOI's etc it is easier if you can snag a job offer. This is probably going to be easier for your current role. You dont have to stay in th role for more than 3 months...
As for me I have a job offer that i want but cant sell the damn house. So havent submitted the ITA yet might just go for a work visa and then re-apply for the EOI and ITA when in NZ.

best wishes

Ian

Hi

We were in a similar situation to you when we submitted everything 4 years ago. (Husband wasn't in the same trade as your partner though). I had completed a full honours degree and undertaken teaching qualifications whilst working at an FE college.(10 years experience)

Firstly the nearest equivalent in NZ was a University Lecturer for which a MA/Msc etc was a mimimum requirement, however as I worked with 14-20 year olds I could align the teaching process's to those in a Secondary School. I mainly taught vocational quals as well as a few GCSE/AS/A2 classes.

I was the lead applicant and had to first have my quals assessed - a relatively quick and easy process. Secondly I had to apply for Registration with the Teachers Council which was far from straight forward as my route to teaching wasn't a standard one and the subjects/classes I taught were not easily aligned to NZ. I had to provide Lesson Plans/Schemes of work/IV/EV reports and anything else I hadn't thrown away!!!!! This process took approximately 9 months due to the Teachers Council only reviewing these applications at infrequent specific meetings. This delayed our PR application as the Teachers Registration was required for PR if claiming points for anything connected with teaching - qualifications/experience/job offer. Everything was then quite straight forward.

I would suggest looking into the registration situation for both of you alongside the points you each would get to help you decide the best way to move forward. We certainly hadn't appretiated the time it would take to sort out the registration and the nerves, as If I hadn't my 'teachers number' it that may have been the end of our dream.

Best of luck with whatever you decide.

Catherine

Hi Catherine

So, if I'm reading that correctly, even though I don't plan to necessarily teach while I'm out there, I still have to register to gain points?

:roll This whole emigrating lark seems more and more difficult each time I log on here! And there I was thinking the most difficult bit was going to be selling the house and shipping things! (odd, I know.)

I'm also beginning to think this whole process will take years between being NQZA assessed and now a Teachers Registration (for some reason I assumed that was only for primary/secondar teaching:confused: ).
The only thing that brings a small smile to my face is thinking what a hard time they will have themselves in assessing me - I teach Animal Studies! :laugh

Thanks for the heads up anyway.

Hi Kerry

We were given our PR without any sign of a job offer and had been advised when I had spoken to immigration that because my qualifications and majority of my work experience related to teaching I would be required to show NZ registration. It was a grey area as I was not a HE lecturer and do not have MSC/MA quals, but not really a school teacher either.I have not worked in teaching here and to be honest did not intend to unless it was a necessity to acheive our ultimate aim of being able to move here.
It was 4 years ago we applied therefore with the number of changes that seem to occur it would be worth checking current requirements. May be someone else on the forum whose been through the process more recently may know current requirements.

Whenever we spoke to anyone at immigration they were surprisingly helpful. May be a call/e-mail to them might clarify everything for you based on your situation.

If you do need to do as we did I wouldn't let it put you off as we found that it took us quite some months to get organised in terms of selling property etc. so although it sounds like a long delay the reality may be that you need that time to get other things sorted out. If like us it is your dream to move here don't lose sight of that as the time and any hassles that may be encountered on the way are ultimately worth it.

Hi Catherine

Thanks for the advice and positive words.
I will definately check with immigration in the near future, I still have 1 year left on my PGCE to complete but want to use this year to organise everything and be prepared for any hitches I might encounter.
This is the dream, so I shall overcome!

It does sound like you were basically in the same situation as me, so it's reassuring to see that you've made it.

Thanks again for the help.
