Hi,
I've been in Auckland a month now, and I'm still searching for a decent fish n chip shop, as anyone any recommendations? particularly out in the Eastern area.

So far I've tried 'em in Central Auckland, Mt Eden and Howick (near Foodtown) and Cockle Bay. So far the fish's has been ok but on the small side, complemented with stacks of chips. I'd settle for less of the latter and a decent size fish.

Of the above the, best was the Mt Eden fish n chip shop. Though all cheaper, not a patch on what I got a home (between Barnsley and Huddersfield) where I was spolit by good selection of places.

Are you asking for the right thing?

When you ask for fish, you have the option of getting a fillet which are much bigger (or at least they are at the chip shops we frequent) than the normal fish portions that are served.

Are you just asking for fish? You could well end up with shark. Or so I'm told

:p :p

We normally go for Blue Cod or Akaroa cod, or Hoki :yes

Well, been asking for fish n chips, it usually been tarakihi fish. Will look out for the fillet next time round, hopefully it's bigger. As I say I'd galdly sacrifice half of the chips for a decent sized fish.

There's your problem right there. You've come from the best place in the world for fish and chips. Between Leeds and Barnsley. Nothing else anywhere is going to compare.

Not wanting to hijack but what does make good Fish and Chips ?

Is it the fish, the freshness of cooking, the batter, the breaded crumb the chips, price?
What does is it for you?

One of the best I've had was in Aviemore , Scotland , a few years ago.

For me it has to be tasty batter, good moist fish and crispy chips :yes :yes

Chippy in Rangiora Victoria St I think - fabulous :D Friday night family pack fish (2 pieces), meat pattie (don't know what that is as make Duncan eat it!!), two sausages and a ton of tasty chips - $10 thank you very much :)

P.S sorry nothing to do with chippies in Auckland :)

OH is born and bred Huddersfield man so believe me he is fussy about his fish and chips! :roll However we've found a great place in Browns Bay, North Shore on Beach Road near the junction with Anzac Rd. From the outside it looks like a grotty place but the fish and chips are great and all freshly cooked. Oh gives them the thumbs up too! :nice1

Just up the road from us on Greville Road is Oceanz (the best chip shop north of the harbour bridge for 2007 - apparently) but we've never tried them and in anycase they never seem to stay open very late. However their fresh fish counter is fab!

The other place we like is the Fishpot in Misson Bay although we've only ever eaten in.

One thing we've had to get used to is the way you order at fish 'n chip shops here our standard order now goes - 1 chips, 1 sausage (for DS), 1 snapper crumbed, 2 snapper battered, NO salt. It comes all wrapped up together as well. If you're not a fan of tons of salt on your chips you need to say you don't want salt as it seems to be the norm to put it on. Also large chip portions seem to be the norm, it took a couple of times before we realised 1 portion was enough between the three of us!

Good luck finding somewhere you like.

If you ever make it out Devonport way, I like Catch 22, Victoria Road, (fish is lovely, chips are average). Its only take away but you can go and eat at the reserve and look out over the sea.

The only downside is you will always be surrounded by at least 7 seagulls, eyeing your food up!

At our place the Hoki is usually quite big but the snapper is smaller, so maybe varying the type of fish you ask for, may make a difference in portion size

Cheers

LOL They're huge aren't they! One portion is more than enough for us two...even the cat gets some :p

Another vote for Catch 22 :nice1

Don't you just love the way that the fish is all cooked to order here and you have a huge range of fish to choose from.

My Kiwi OH says Marsics in Glenn Innes, (which is also a fish market shop) is the best in the Eastern area. As to the Fish Pot in Mission Bay, you are right its OK if you eat in, they have stop bothering to care about their takeaway customers, the chips are usually way overdone and dry (maybe some like them that way but not me) in my view highly overrated, and still trading on their reputation from years ago when they used to be the best in Auckland. That can also be said of quite a few places in Mission Bay!

Oooh Ive seen that place but always steered clear because it looks like a grotty shack (for want of a better word :)) I think we might try it now then.

We also get one lot of chips to share and there is usually some left over!! and I can eat chippy anyday:p

Defo worth a try, I think you'll be pleasently surprised! The chap who (I assume) owns and runs it is really friendly too and always offers my wee one a lollipop when we go in. I stopped in to get sausage and chips for DS last night after his footie practice and it was the grand sum of $3.10 all freshly cooked and a HUGE portion of chips.

Got to be Catch 22 in Devonport for me as well. The Hoki is great and the Kumara chips are excellent!

Fishmonger in Parnell is pretty good. Best chili mussels around too.

ohhhh I still miss the way fish is cooked in the UK - the batter - is SO nice - the scraps that you get for free (that are chucked out here!) the vinegar the soggy chips covered in curry sauce that drips down your chin on the bus home on a Friday night........

fab

Yeah ask for a fillet. They are twice as big...... but more money.
And dripping? yak Heart attack on a plate.

LOL! I still fondly remember when arriving in summer we thought eating our fish 'n chips at the beach was great. Never again, had to actively fight off predator like seagulls!

I quite like our local in Mairangi Bay in that little shopping area next to Food Town. Ivan's Takeaways in Glenfield is quite good too, but I prefer it more for its great burgers.

I agree with Gloria, that FishPot Cafe in Mission Bay is only good for eat in. their takeaway is really below par in comparison.

I like the Fishmart in Jervois Road, Herne Bay - firstly it's fabulous fresh fish, with great chips, and secondly because it's only a couple of minutes from my house.
