I have a north american LCD HDTV which i currently have set up thru HDMI. Does anyone know if this set will work with an nz skytv box?

does skytv output as a digital signal that my lcd tv, basically a giant computer monitor, can take? Or am i going to still have an NTSC/PAL issue?

kind of a low grade techie question, maybe someone can help?

Sky in NZ doesn't currently output thru HDMI it's main connector is Scart but you can also connect via composite video or S-vhs. I would expect your TV to already have suitable connectors so shouldn't be a problem.

Most LCD TVs can handle all flavours of PAL anyway, you need to just check it can handle PAL B/G and you won't have any problems.

Or you can wait for the new Sky HD that is being launched soon which will have an HDMI output. Or of course you can already get Freeview which again if the terrestrial version has an HDMI output.

You should of course check if the power supply can handle 240V or you may need transformer?

Check your owners manual (or do an internet search for your model of TV) it may handle the video signal as well as the power. I know that my TV is rated for all the power signals in the world so I only need a plug adaptor. (Of course, my TV also doesn't like PAL).

We currently live in the UK and moved from Canada in October 2007. We brought with us 2 TV's, one 42" Plasma HDTV and a smaller LCD HDTV. Neither of our TV's have scarts on them and the only way we could set up our Plasma TV was to purchase a HD Sky Box and hook it up with an HDMI cable. We first tried the composite video cable, but it did not work properly and we could not get a proper picture, so we had to fork out £300 for the HD Sky Box which had the HDMI cable hook up. The Plasma TV works great and we have our Bose surround system hooked up to it which we also brought from Canada. We run all our North American electrical items through step-down converters.

We purchased a Wi game here, a UK version, but it would not work on our TV, even though we have a switch that we could turn our TV from NTSC to PAL, so we returned it and purchased a North American version of the Wi and it also works perfectly.

On our other smaller LCD TV, we purchased a Wharfedale Freeview box from Argos which has an HDMI hook up and our LCD TV works fine with that. However, we did have a UK DVD Player with an HDMI cable hook up and we couldn't get the LCD TV to work with that, but as I said it works great with the Freeview.

We will very soon be moving to NZ, and find ourselves in a similar predicament to yourself. However, we know that we will have to wait for Sky in NZ to bring out their HD box so that we can use our TV over there, unless of course the Freeview in NZ will make it work with HDMI, (obviously a much cheaper option.) Our UK HDTV Sky Box looks exactly the same as the one on the web site for Sky TV in NZ, but I don't think it will work in NZ, although we are tempted to bring it with us and try it by changing the card to a NZ Sky TV card. Not sure if this will work though, so might sell our UK HDTV Sky Box before we move to NZ, this is something we haven't quite decided on yet.

One tip, you might want to purchase your HDMI cables in the USA and bring them with you as I have heard that they are around $30 each in NZ and they are definitely much cheaper than that in the USA.

In answer to your question regarding, does skytv output as a digital signal that my lcd tv, basically a giant computer monitor, can take? Or am i going to still have an NTSC/PAL issue?

No, you should not have a problem as digital HDTV is accepting a digital signal and the issue of NTSC/PAL doesn't actually come into it. If a digital TV can accept a digital signal, it will work anywhere in the world providing you have the correct voltage and cables to get it hooked up to the digital output device, IE: A HDTV Sky Box or Freeview with HDMI cable hook-up.

In hindsight, if we had known that it would be so expensive to get our TV's working in the UK we would have not brought them with us and now we have no choice, but to take them to NZ because who in the UK will want a North American TV :laugh Now we find that when we get to NZ we will once again have to pay through the nose to get our TV hooked up as someone said that the subscription to Sky is $599 and we don't know if that includes the cost of the HD Sky Box or not. Funny thing is, I don't ever watch TV, it's my OH that watches it, but hey what the heck if it keeps him quiet :D

Hope you enjoy NZ, maybe we will see you there.

Mazzie :cheers
