List number two - What do you recommend to take in your suitcases

Mels

The next list I thought I'd compile is:

What did you pack, or wished you had packed? not in an extra box, just what can go in your suitcase(s)

Obviously you pack jamas, toothpaste and clothes but as you don't see your container for a few weeks - what else?

I was thinking:

duvet covers for the boys
few toys
tuperware boxes for lunch boxes
food bags/clips
favourite mug (may break, but a comfort to hug when stressed)

Please add to list as there are things that I just wouldn't think of until too late
Thanks

OH & I were discussing this today too. We also had:

Hairdryer
Multi - sockets
Air beds & pump
Towels & Tea towels
Alarm clocks
Pillows (if space allows)

Any more suggestions?

There was a thread about this by Marcia, I think, just before she was arriving, but I can't find it, sorry. I can, however, remember advising her to bring dressing gowns, and would say same to you guys if you are arriving anytime that is not high summer. :yes

Mels, any special reason for food bags/clips? You can get them at the supermarket here...

good idea for a thread! I may start one for people who are just going with suitcases and nothing else! Cries!

We're going with suitcases, a few extra bags, and two boxes that we will post to ourselves.

Clothes, books, toiletries, computers, guitars, etc.

Just 'cos whenever I need one I can't find one. They belong in the 'I can only find one sock' category!!!

But useful to know they are readily available thanks.
Hopefully we will be arriving by June so dressing gown definately on list as are slippers.

Here's a thread I started before we came out last year - it includes a long list of items to bring. The other thing we did was make a list of what was in each case so we didn't have to rummage through 4 before the item we were looking for.

Defo second the list in each case thing. We had 8 massive cases between the 4 of us. Brought loads of kitchen stuff, everything I could fit in, veg peeler, knives, grater stuffed with socks, you name it! Also squashed up all our duvets and pillows into tight balls and taped them with gaffer tape and brought them as well, with all my bedding.

Yep we had one case solely dedicated to bedding - new quilts and loads of cheapo sale duvet covers and sheets from Argos.. Buy one get one free how can a girl resist?? :)

P.S. Obviously all used beforehand :D

Right with you on bringing your favourite mug to wrap your hands around:yes

Had thought about putting a hot water bottle in (with a comforting cover obviously:laugh )

By the way, those of you saying about jamming your cases with bedding...I mean packing your cases with bedding:roll , did you just go...with your suitcases or did you have a visa/PR etc?

We had PR though I think others have done it without - customs not even remotely interested... :)

I think the choices depend on where you're going. As for Wellington, I regret not taking more warm socks and not taking rain pants. Most of the temporary household stuff is available at Salvation Army for peanuts (and the money goes to a good cause), and you can just give the stuff back when you're done with it.

Recommend bringing duvet and pillows. We vacuum packed them so didn't use as much space.Brought bedding, dressing gown, cutlery, adaptors plus extension leads, laptop as well as the usual.

We only had a couple of suitcases (although quite a lot of flight bags and car seats!), this was because we were doing a fair bit of traveling around when we first arrived.

Also we were taking a few internal flights, who don't allow as generous luggage allowance as the international ones.

I think if you are going straight to your final destination you may as well pack as much as you can, so you can limit your time shopping when you arrive and increase your time job hunting or sightseeing.

I take klippits and food bags with me every time I travel! :D

Did anyone mention mini first aid pack and kids meds?

Cheers

Definitely agree...bring some painkillers for jetlag headaches.

If you have small kids take nappies...lots!! Yes they have some on the planes...but only a limited size range (didn't fit my older 2 at all). And put extra in your cases for your first day too....you don't want to spend time hunting down nappies when you have jetlag!
