We have been here for over a year now, bit late on the thread, but not sure how to approach it. I thought as I had reached my 3000th post I would celebrate that fact with a 12 month update. Oh how I wish the Lounge posts counted I would have doubled my tally :nice1

I could just do a chronological list of places been to/things done, but that is already documented on other threads on here.

When we first arrived, it was the end of a very stressful period in our lives or so we thought. We still had some amazing stress to come that was out of our control.
I think some mention must be made of Kim39 and his family, without who's help we would have been well and truly up the creek. We had spent a bit of time together back in the UK at the NZ NW meets and we didn't live too far apart. They collected us from the airport and showed us quite a bit of the locality and were our first introduction to this wonderful land. As our bad luck would have it (and theirs!) our house sale hit a lot of problems and we ended up staying longer than was expected, and it was a very stressful time. So, Kim, Elaine, Nicola and Hayley, you know the story, thank you all, it is still appreciated.

It seems that Cambridge was destined to be our home. It was the very first place that we were taken to (for a dental appointment for one of Kim's girls!) and we sat and had a coffee in the main street, little did we think as we sat there that we would end up living in the town. I can't say that we were overly impressed at the time because we were not taking too much notice (and were still jet lagged) and fully expected to be in Wellington or Auckland, as it was, Jan ended up getting a job here and the rest as they say, is history. We got the kids sorted in school and found a rental.

I started to look for work. and it took longer than expected soo I took a job just to get NZ experience and to get out in to the job market. Not the best of things but it put food on the table and kept us going, and it was an eye opener for me to get first hand experience of the NZ job scene.
I didn't intend staying and told the manager in the first week, it just wasn't me to be honest, not even my line of work, but he appreciated the help I was giving because they had a big project in Waikato that needed completing.

That job finished and I got a call from an earlier interview to tell me I could have the job, in my field of work and it provided a big pay increase. I took up the position and we felt comfortable enough with NZ to consider buying our own home. We now have a nice 4 bed home and we love it.

We suffered the usual stresses and strains that a move to the other end of the earth brings, but we came in to this experience with our eyes wide open (thanks to this forum). It hasn't always been easy, but we feel settled here.

It is a beautiful country. We feel a lot healthier, the kids do more sport than they have ever done in the past, the school is great for them. They have the chance to be challenged whereas in their last school in the UK, we were told that our son couldn't progress any further than the level he was at with one year to go, he had been taught to the maximum level for the junior school. Here? They put him in extra maths and science programmes run by the university of Waikato, he is challenged and is thriving. Likewise Louisa, who has dyspraxia. They have addressed it and worked around it with more than acceptable solutions. We are now going forward and enjoying our lives here. We have a good social circle and are doing some of the things that all the glossy brochures tell you about NZ. It has been an awfully long, hot summer - drought even!

To brighten up the winter, as well as all the winter sports that our environment invites you to take part in, there are the kids football and netball seasons to look forward to. We have the promise of a trip back to UK for a wedding and to see our families as an added bonus

So there it is, sure there is a heap more stuff to say, but one thing is for certain, we like what we see and we are in it for the long term. But, you can never say never because you just don't know what the future throws up at you. But for the time being, we are very happy with our situation down here.

All the best

Steve, Jan, Kieran and Louisa

Steve, thanks for an honest bird's eye view of your first year in NZ. Sam and I know a little of your history and don't know how you managed those first few angst filled weeks. Having said that, you, Jan, Kieran and Louisa have made a great life for yourselves in Cambridge and made lots of good friends. :cheers

Great update Stevie!

The NW meets for us, and many others I think too, were a hugely important part of this process, meeting like minded people, who have become life long friends, others who understand totally the emotional journey, and are there for each other whenever, where ever, make you feel like you're not out there alone, but have mates to turn to. We may all be spread all over New Zealand now, but a bond was formed for life! :)

Hope your trip back to the UK, helps you to remember the resaons you wanted to leave in the first place and makes you feel like you have made the right choices for your family.

Heres to the next 12 months :cheers

Hope so too Marcia! And after reading one of Jan's friends blogs just now, I know that we HAVE made the right move. And I think it's right you say that the NW meets did provide a focal point for the whole process. As I used to always say, people who weren't involved used to get the "glass eyeball effect", whereas the forumites had a common goal. It is easy to lose touch as we are spread over the country, but a bond was formed, however tenuous, and we still remember those meets with fondness and the friendships that were formed. Not everyone made it, for whatever reason, but we still think of Diny and Jo B and others who have tried, and not quite stayed the course. We are so glad that we went to those meets, and we take interest in those that are following.

And yes Tia, we have only been here a year!! :laugh Just been around on the forum a bit longer.....

I now have 5 kids in the house sitting watchin Nanny McPhee, Louisa's friend from school, my kids and 2 of the neighbours kids, all sat here in their pyjamas. Wouldn't really have happened too much in UK, but here it is a matter of course. A favour here and there for friends and neighbours, that is how it works. We feel comfortable, more comfortable than we have for many a year. We aren't rolling in money (never have been) but we feel like we have won the lottery here. We walk by the river, collecting pine cones and chestnuts for the chimnera on the deck, play games and just sit out on the deck looking at the amazing night sky, listening to the sounds and enjoying the simple things in life.

We have done so much, yet there is so much more to do, and that is the attraction of the years to come.

Right, I'm off to have a beer and watch the film with the others.

Nice postings Steve :-)

I've just got back from a night in the Wairarapa.
Went to stay with the daughter of the sister of a friend...... who was turning 19 and was going to be on her own..... just for a bit of company and help her dog sit. (They have 2 red setters who are delightful - if not energetic - and my pup loves them!)
Then we had a great night - eating fish and chips with (just discovered) almost UK chinese-type curry sauce..... and watching trashy telly.

The night before - Deborah (Smiler) was here.
She got here in the afternoon and we snaffled the nicest walnut bread and Emmental with some of her amazing quince jelly and a selection of Lisa's dips... a bottle of Lindauer and later a crisp Savvy.

Then - later on we had pizza and Southern Comfort in our jammies and watched DVDs all night.

Just chillin with me little mate.... who I would never have known if it hadnt been for this forum - and who has become one of my bestest friends in the whole wide world!

It's a simple life......... thank god...... and we love it too!

Must get back on the diet plan tomorrow though...

StevieD, I just read your post going all goosey on my arms because as you know, we're going to be in Cambridge soonish and I can't wait to experience it and it all sounds GOOD ( yes I realise lots of stress but hey its an adventure and we've sold the house, done the meds, told family/work so a few steps out the way already)!

Carry on being so positive, you'll go far!

What a lovely update Steve.

Nothing better than looking at your kids and seeing them thriving - marvelous.

When I look back to those NW Meets I am amazed that so much has happened to us all in such a short space of time and that the time seems to have passed so quickly.

So pleased that you and Jan have found your piece of paradise and long may it continue.

Love and best wishes,

Julie and PB1

Enjoy the next year and more.

StevieD - Love your open and honest posts, it is a stressful journey isn't it? There'd be no highs without the lows, and in your famiy's case you've certainly thrown yourself wholeheartedly into the experience - with a little help from your Kiwi friend (Paddy!!!) of course (love him)

It is amazing, from those first tentative steps in the pub in Cheshire to laying here, looking at the sun on the trees outside, as somebody said somewhere else, I got bruises from pinching myself :)

I have been looking back through those old NW meet photos, quite good to see so many faces who have made it over.

Isn't it always the way, you get comfortable and all of a sudden the rug is pulled from under you.

Just got a phone call from our admin lady in work, she is over in Gisborne on holiday, basically to tell me that the company has been sold and that we are all redundant and have to re-apply for our jobs!!!! The big boss phoned me a short while later to confirm and tell me what the situation is.

Well blow me down with a feather! Where to and what the heck now is anybody's guess, but I guess we'll just have to see what pans out. :(

Bolt from the blue!! Although looking at the signs over the last few months (bills being unpaid, blaming the accounts department etc.) and signs of management stress becoming more obvious, yes I suppose the writing has been on the wall somewhat. The company lost a contract in the south island and it has led to the parent company saying enough is enough. What that holds for the rest of us is unclear but we'll just have to see.

Thanks Sam.
