In light of the recent thread about asthma, I thought this programme might be worth a watch:

HomeSick - TV 2, 7.30pm (Mondays)

Every day of the year, thousands of ordinary New Zealanders are succumbing to a silent killer - and it's one on which many of us have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars - our homes.

In each episode, leading environmentalist Dr Stephen Stokes (Head of the Carbon Group), GP Dr Chantal Gianni, builder Craig "Puka" Linn, and interior designer Hamish Dodd (My House, My Castle), investigate a home that the homeowners claim is making them sick. After hearing from the owners about how they believe their health and happiness have been affected by the property, they move in to conduct the practical and scientific investigations.

Hamish Dodd says that working on Home Sick has been such a rewarding experience as you watch the transformation of sick Kiwi families struggling with health problems and deteriorating houses revert back to happy, healthy families again.

"The Homesick team loves helping Kiwi families get their life back. It is devastating to watch families struggling with health problems, particularly their children because of their dream home."

Hamish adds that it is astounding the number of New Zealanders living in houses that have leak or have asbestos, rising damp, rusting roofs or toxic mould. "Then add one of the most extreme climates in the world - searing hot in summer and freezing, with little or no insulation or heating, in winter - and it is little surprise that Kiwis homes are making us sick."

"As a team we have been able to bring our expertise to each project and really make a difference. The families we have helped have been so appreciative and it's great to know that we are actually making a difference to people's lives," says Hamish.

Each week, with the families health problems diagnosed - including asthma, eczema, stress, nausea and vomiting - the building team moves in to perform an extreme eco renovation on the property that will help transform it to a safer living space for both the family and the environment.

That looks interesting. I wonder if we'll be able to find a way of watching that from the UK? (M's been doing a lot of homework, planning ahead for all eventualities for when we'll be able to go over.)

Saw a bit of this again last night.

In total it cost about $160,000 to renovate the villa to a basic level.

$30,000 plus labour, was spent on insulation/heating/damp control etc, obviously the 'plus labour' bit can add up to quite a bit.

I'd say its definitely worth watching, despite the 'over the top' presentation about how the family is always in mortal danger. As it gives prices for underfloor insulation, pink batts, HRV etc.

It also shows you how it all works, for instance it showed someone taking of the GIB, lining with waterproof material, then installing pink batts. So it gives you a pretty good idea of what to do and how it all looks.

I still find it shocking the conditions these people were living in. :(

Yup Tia, I was going to post on this one, it is very interesting to see the logic behind the insulation and current weather-proofing techniques.

It was OTT but that is how they make these programmes exciting and interesting. (But I can't stand the way the current trend of repeating everything every few minutes is catching on, as if we all have memory span of goldfish)

Plenty of good basic info there too. And no, there was no sympathy coming from my angle coz I know you don't feel that way :P ;)

Agree Tia - the houses so far have been absolutely dire, unreal that someone has bothered to inhabit them. :no

I was a bit gobsmacked at the price of renovation - surely it would have been cheaper to knock it down and start again!!!

Oh no we (in UK or anywhere outside NZ) can't, just like you lot down there can't watch BBCiplayer. Damned annoying isn't it:mad:

Something to do with programme licensing and copyright etc etc. Shame really, I thought we all lived in a global village!!

I THINK M has found a way we can see it, but we haven't watched it yet and he's not home at the moment. When he gets in, I'll find out how and post a link.
