Could someone kindly explain what Quorn is ? Thanks

Sam B

It's a meat substitute product that is a cut above the rest. It's made from mycoprotein or something. It comes in mince, chicken-like pieces and escalopes and various other guises. I wasn't a big fan, but some vegetarians swear by it.

Crunchie bars...............the ones over here are yuck!

Large oval pies with mince(chip shop) - they are yuck over here too
...

You can get Crunchie bars in NZ, I can only assume you don't like NZ Cadbury chocolate? My OH loved Crunchie bars in the UK and she still loves eating the NZ version.

You can get mince pies in NZ as well, NZ is a pie nation there are many different makes and flavours of pie available including many award winning pies.

I will say though that I still haven't seen Chicken and Mushroom flavour.

I am reliably informed by my better half that you can get this. It is available at Abigails in Devonport on the main street near the candle shop.

I'm not going to ask how she knows!!!

Although it probably relates to her hunt for Pot Pourri - anyone know where to get that?

Thanks James but I think its a bit far for me to travel from Wellington - will have to look online to see if I can find a supplier or failing that, I guess I could make my own.

I'm sure I've said this before, but as the Watties Baked Beans are awful (I tried, I tried) the best and cheapest option are Oak Brand Baked Beans as the "English Recipe" Heinz Baked Beans are stupidly priced. They taste very similar, enough for this picky b/bean eater anyway :D

I also can't find Victory V's (if anyone knows what they are!). If anyone sees these lozenge sweets please let me know! :nice1

I've just found some victory v's at my local chemist. PM me if you would like me to send you some.

There are a couple of boosts left at the Lollie Shop in In'gill. $2.90, but if you want them I'll post you up.

We've got a guy from Glasgow at work who was full of flu on Tuesday. I bought him an Irn Bru from the Lollie Shop and he was much improved on Wednesday - now everyone thinks its some sort of miracle cure!

As for Quorn, it always amazes me that people who stop eating meat for whatever reasons still want to eat fake-meat products.

Do they still do the UK stuff in Pak & Save Sylvia Park Auckland that where I got most of my gravy granules. Wish they would stock in Wellington.

good alternative for mint sauce is Bakers Balsamic Mint sauce (long neck bottle) , no added sugar or artificial colouring, find it in the stir fry sauce area in New World.

I never knew until recently that New Worlds are all owned separately hence why they all stock different stuff.

just a couple of things..

Chicken and mushroom pies alive and well in Rangiora bakery
Sanctuary bubble bath cheaper than UK in postie plus stores (not sure how that works)

and between Woolworths and Newworld, I've now been able to get

Branston pickle
oxo cubes
Duchy Original biscuits
Babybel lights (not a fan of the full fat ones)
heinz tomato sauce / HP sauce for OH
caffeine free gold coke

but what I like most of all is that woolworths now do Mcvities chocolate digestives and in the old traditional pack of biscuits style, just like in the UK! - not in the normal tim-tam, plastic box approach style.

still occasionally resort to the Brit shop for Birds eye custard powder and the odd finger of fudge/doube decker when the mood takes us, but apart from that we manage pretty well. Even found some proper dusters, but can't remember where for the life of me,....wasn't a garage though.. poss one of the diy stores ?!

only thing I really miss is low fat muller yoghurts, but am getting used to yoplait which seem to be the closest thing.. then again, quite a few things here that you don't get as easily in the UK. great fresh green lip mussels for one!

Yes you can, but I would check on the gas bottle attachment if you decide to bring one from the UK - I think they are different from the ones in NZ. Have a vague recollection of someone bringing a gas bbq from the UK and couldn't get an adaptor......maybe I'm wrong !!!

I think you could well be right Julie - the gas bottle adapter on my BBQ in NZ is very different to the one here at my parents' in the UK. More of a clip in nozzle than a twist, if that makes any sense?

Those patio heaters aren't very expensive in places like Mitre 10, so unless you have a lot of room in your container I wouldn't bother buying one especially.

There has been a thread quite recently, I'm sure, where somebody mentioned having brought a barbecue over with them, and having the nozzle changed at one of the petrol stations where you get the bottles filled. I remember because we were pleased, reading that, at the idea of being able to convert our gas cooker. Also, I'm almost sure it was said that you aren't allowed to ship the gas bottles themselves. I'll have a search in a minute.

JandM
29th April 2008, 11:34 AM
 Right, well, I'm not having a lot of luck with that. The search facility tells me it won't use the word 'gas' because it's too common or too short. This makes it rather unlikely it's going to come up with anything about what I'm looking for on this occasion! I will try more later, though.

Don't worry about it too much, it's just an idle thought. The connectors are usually just jubilee-clipped onto the rubber hose, so they wouldn't be difficult to change. I'm sure you're right that they wouldn't be too chuffed about trying to ship a gas bottle! :)

JandM
29th April 2008, 10:55 PM
Going back to your original question about the patio heaters, yes, they definitely have them. We sat by one on the deck belonging to some of the family last August, not that it needed to be lit at the time, so that was pretty good for winter.

there is a chip shop in Howick that makes them she doesnt do a bad job, nice big chunks of steak and potato... yum.... she also makes scotch pies which arent too bad either!

The last cornish pasties that we bought in NZ were actually minced beef at the bottom and mashed potato on top. Nothing like what we were expecting but didn't taste too bad.

So I would have to say that many people don't even know what one is.

I think a purely pastie shop would be a bit too limited - can you do black pudding, pork pies, haggis, sausages, beef dripping, pheasant, turkey and all that other luvverly British-type butchery that you either can't get, or can't get "proper" versions of, here? Agree with Helen, -could work in one of the cities with a big expat area, but you'd probably need to come up with a range - perhaps partly delicatessen type thing.. I still haven't found a decent scotch egg either...and not that I'm a major fan, but I hear pork pies are a bit lacking!

Yes, you can get these if you want them.

It should be mentioned that many beaches and parks have public BBQ equipment that you can use, so you may find you don't even need one of them.

And of course you may want to have a BBQ more often in NZ as there is more time that you can have one, even now in the middle of winter.

Depending on where you are you may find that you use a BBQ slightly more than 2 - 3 times a year; we had a good BBQ in Victoria Park in Auckland yesterday lunchtime after a work rugby game for example!

Your best bet is to get a portable gas-fired one that will fold down to briefcase size and can be easily put together.

Children's magazines, I saw something posted about them earlier in the thread. I always used to buy my daughter the monthly Barbie magazine and the monthly Bratz magazine. I can't find them here at all?? Anyone seen them?

And viennas? In South Africa we made hotdogs with viennas, you could cook them or eat them straight out the fridge - I can't find the equivalent here. Although I suppose it would be frankfurters? But can you eat them without cooking them?

OK a couple of obscure ones to test your powers of observation, have you seen either of these in NZ?

Child's queen sized Duvet Cover (Boy): My son (age 7) is moving into his own room, as its also the guest room, its a queen sized bed. But I would like to make it feel more like a boys room with a typical boys duvet cover, seen any?

Kids toothbrushing timer: Seen a couple of types in the UK, one was an electric one that had a timer on it. Another one was a toothbrush stand with a kind of egg timer you turned over when you started brushing.

Go, go, go find these items for me and you will be handsomely rewarded with ....... a big thank you! :)
