Children's magazines, I saw something posted about them earlier in the thread. I always used to buy my daughter the monthly Barbie magazine and the monthly Bratz magazine. I can't find them here at all?? Anyone seen them?

And viennas? In South Africa we made hotdogs with viennas, you could cook them or eat them straight out the fridge - I can't find the equivalent here. Although I suppose it would be frankfurters? But can you eat them without cooking them?

I've seen kids mags here but few and far between and really expensive $10-12 a time :uhoh My Mum sends some over for our boys at once or twice a month and they love them - take much better care of them too than they did back in the UK :yes

Child's queen sized Duvet Cover (Boy): My son (age 7) is moving into his own room, as its also the guest room, its a queen sized bed. But I would like to make it feel more like a boys room with a typical boys duvet cover, seen any?

Kids toothbrushing timer: Seen a couple of types in the UK, one was an electric one that had a timer on it. Another one was a toothbrush stand with a kind of egg timer you turned over when you started brushing.

Tia

Ok, best I can do on the Kids toothbrush timer is this (a UK based site): http://www.gltc.co.uk/fcp/product/-/bathroom%20essentials/Toothbrush-Timer/2356
or try Ebay.

www.shopsmart.co.nz have got a 'double' Thomas duvet set, not sure if that will be big enough for a 'queen' sized bed though. Or try www.queenb.co.nz

Cornish pasties with steak in? The original recipe is for lamb, surely? (With potato and onion and carrot.)

ooooh the pain the pain:wah ....LAMB.....CARROTS?????? Please somebody give me something for the pain!!!! :p

Being a Cornish Maid, I feel I need to tell you about the humble little pasty- sad I know, but I can hear my mother nagging me from the pasty shop in the sky, here goes - hope this keeps you happy mum!

A proper Cornish Pasty, and I dont mean the ones sold by that name but the type made my mum, her mum, her mums mum - you get the picture! - should have good quality lean beef doesnt have to be stk, potato, onion (optional) and swede. (note to self...stop sounding like your mother!!:yes)
It was introduced for the tin miners for their midday meal to eat down the mine, savoury one end, sweet the other with a little pastry division in between. The crimp was there for the miners to hold onto then throw away so they didnt get dirt on the bit that was being eaten. Right, I'll get off my soapbox now, history lesson over. Off for me lunch :D

Clearly, this isn't going to be a deal breaker on whether we make the move or not, but can you get good greek yoghurt in NZ?

Also, what are the fruit juices like? Mostly concentrate?

JandM

You certainly can get good Greek yoghurt. I don't remember anything in particular about the fruit juices, but you can get lots of fresh fruit more cheaply and easily than in the UK, so could do your own juice.

My list is probably strange and eclectic

Valances - they're just not proper here. I've bought two and they've turned out to actually be bedskirts i.e. they only go on the base of the bed. The ones at home are like fitted sheets with long side so they cover the bed. My mum is sending one out for me!

Plastic basin that can go in the sink. We can't find one anywhere, only plastic buckets.

Nice strong cheese, the cheese here is crap.

Diet coke, I was addiced at home but it tastes horrible here, like chemicals so I've switched me allegiance to L & P.

French bread - we have a bakery down the road and the bread is nice but it's quite soft. I miss the crunchiness of baguettes at home.

Irish sausages - they're just not the same here. I miss juicy sausages from superquinn. Also black and white pudding.

Fresh brown bread - not the sliced pan. The nutty fresh little brown handmade loaves. They have a brand called mcCambidge's at home (not sure if you can get it in the uk) and I used to have it with cheese and it was gorgeous. Great for little sandwitches for lunch. I've yet to find anything like it here. Even in bakeries. I also miss soda bread.

Percy Pigs - I would kill for a bag of these. Seriously. I brought two big bags from home and put them out at our housewarming. They didn't last long and everyone asked me where I got them. Think my mother will be sending some of those too! I'd also kill for M & S smokey bacon and roqufort handbaked crisps. Actually, I'd kill for M & S in general!

Wow - the list was longer than I thought!

Here in southern England, we call the first thing you mention a valance sheet, with a valance being the thing you found you'd bought in NZ. And your plastic basin would be a polythene bowl for us.

and to add to the confusion I'd call them 'plastic bowls' :exit

Watna, do you mean a plastic bowl to wash up in ? ? If so we got ours in Mitre 10 Mega in Upper Hutt :)

Excellent. That's exactly what I'm after and I was only in Mitre 10 in Kilbirnie earlier. Unfortunately we have bedbugs that we seemed to have picked up staying in hostels on our travels and I was looking for highly toxi chemicals! :exit

Off topic.. if anyone has any bedbug solutions please let me know. At the moment I look like a leper!

@ JandM, a valance sheet you say? I'll keep an eye out for that. I haven't seen them anywhere though. I've been to a fair few shops and only seen valances. I've bought two from two different shops and they're what I call bed skirts.

JandM
30th June 2008, 09:51 PM
Are you sure your bites are from bedbugs? Only bedbugs usually stay hidden in a place (e.g. in the furnishings or behind the wallpaper) and just come out to feed, rather than travelling on the poor human. Hence the usual treatment is getting pest-control to do a fumigation. It's usually only if people move furniture from an infested house that the bugs go, too (or if their luggage was there for a LONG time, long enough for the bugs to move into it). Have you seen whatever it is that's bitten you? If you're sure it's gone with you from one place to another, it could be fleas or lice. (Incidentally, the only time I ever caught fleas was when I spent the day in a five-star hotel with friends who were just about to emigrate - just shows they appreciate luxury, too!)

Good luck for the valance sheets. I've come close to picking up the wrong package sometimes when getting a new set of linen - a lot of them these days have a picture on the label.

JandM

And yes, you CAN get good peanut butter. Some is pretty naff, but some is top quality - ask around for brands when you get there. (I can't remember names, but I remember my first shop for our holiday house last August, and my son removing the peanut butter I'd picked up in ignorance, and replacing it, saying, 'No - you'll LIKE this one, but that one is wallpaper paste.')

Here's a tricky one - Gluten powder?

Its not that easy to find in the UK, but its really handy for making your own vegetarian "meat" products without resorting to buying pre-packaged stuff. The alternative is taking strong wheat flour, making a dough and then washing the starch out which takes ages.

From my experience in NZ in 2005, pre-made veggie stuff is much less common so I'm thinking I'll be doing more home made veggie "chicken", veggie roast, etc.

Also anyone seen oak roasted/smoked tomatoes? I get these at the local farmer's market, absolutely divine.

Things I miss still...... even after ALl this time!

1. Scampi (as in pub meals)
2. Greggs pasties (North east bakery..... they have one in Newcastle airport especially for ex-pats I reckon)
3. Decent Chinese take-away curries
4. Pease Pudding. (I've resorted to making my own but its a proper faff!)
5. Decent fruit cordial
6. Walkers crisps
7. Schweppes "russchian" mixer for vodke (not sure if you can still get it in the UK either actually)
8. Decent vegetarian products - including Quorn. (There HAS to be a market for it!!)
9. Fromage Frais - although you can get similar
10. Proper buffallo mozzarella
11. Wensleydale/Cheshire cheese
12. Cheap paracetamol and Anadin Extra

I could go on......

There was Robinsons squash, Walkers crisps, ready brek, chocolate bars amongst other things we hadn't seen in over 3 years ! !
And they weren't too badly priced either, no where near as expensive as the British Shops are (imo).

Buffalo mozzarella you can get from Kapiti cheese, very, very similar to the real thing (IMO). The Linkwater cheddar cheese in Moore Wilsons is very similar to a strong british cheddar and is now our preference :nice1

Cadbury's chocolate is very different. There are far more exotic flavours in the large flat block style (e.g. Tiramisu, Rocky Road, Boysenberry & Lemon Cheesecake)

I'm not fussed on missing scampi, but my wife's family is. Whenever they came to visit us in the UK, they'd have scampi all the time!

This is the original brown sauce and no idea why Woolworths list this as a steak sauce?

Liquid Smoke http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Lifestyle/Wine-food/Food/auction-167281815.htm

;)

For bbq sauces that are more "gourmet" than the supermarket supplies you'll probably find them trawling round the little boutique/deli-esque stores around the country. Have fun trying out all the different types!

"Wild Appetite" (I think they do mail order) are a good brand and they also do their own liquid smoke (in a 3-tiered bottle with 3 flavours!). I buy Zarbo (sp?) sauces and dressings when I come across them in the stores.

Kerry - would be interested in your bbq sauce recipe if it's not a family secret ;)

As per Jo Jo I can't get Ourmate in our local supermarket (Four Square) just the local Marmite which is gross - I have to go to a major one - similarly I can't get Colman's Mustard or Heinz or Best Foods Mayo (which is basically Hellmanns) at the local store.

One thing I hadn't seen before and which is being promoted as a new product in Woolworths is Irn Bru - OH v. chuffed when I brought that home. ;)

Best foods Mayo is nowhere near as wonderful as Hellman's:no. My darling brother sent some out to us.

We haven't been able to find Mint choc chip icecream anywhere and I have been looking everywhere we have been for 8 months.

To say we are in dairy central, Waikato, the lack of quality cheeses is astounding and if there are any the price just scares me

Honey nut cornflakes

One for the girls. No Always!

Proper chip shop chips

Decent dilute juices

Calpol I couldn't find anything like it

And other stuff I can't remember at the moment, so it can't be that important

Best Foods mayo and Hellmans are actually made by the same company and are almost identical in recipe so I'm suprised you can even notice a difference. Apparently the Best Foods one is slightly more tangy?

Not found any mint choc ice cream either, the closest was a mint cornetto but even this isn't the same as the UK. Can't get cookie dough ice cream either.

You can certainly get honey nut corn flakes (do seem a little expensive).

Proper chip shop chips, are you talking frozen or from a fish and chip shop?

Closest equivalent of Calpol appears to be Paracare Junior Suspension.

Gosh, I can't find canned black beans or pinto beans. How am I supposed to make real refried beans.

Woolworths and New World do pinto beans in cans, usually in the ethnic foods area or the organic aisle :yes

I'll have a look at New World, I couldn't find them in our Woolworths today.

I always check the ethnic area - it's amazing what they put in there!! Mind you, I use the bigger supermarkets in Chch so not sure what size they are in Palmy North! :o

I was in the Ethnic section to find tortillas. I'll be making my own salsa and guacamole and refried beans (from dry if I have to) and rice...

I'm needing good tex-mex food.

The ethnic section of Woolworths wasn't that impressive to me. But then I shopped at a Whole Foods in the US where the ethnic section seemed to be half of the store.

I've taken to making my own guac too - the stuff in the deli'/fridge section (in little plastic tubs) is really bland imo.

Can you freeze pulped avocado or made-up guac?

I get my tex-mex fix at Flying Burrito Bros in Chch (there's on in Welly and Auckland, too, I think?)

The ethnic section of Woolworths wasn't that impressive to me I think it really depends on the ethnic make-up of the locality, although I agree, most aren't worth writing home about! Can you mail order tex-mex stuff I wonder - haven't tried!

Another supplier to check out would be Bin Inn (http://www.bininn.co.nz/), doesn't appear to be any around Palmerston North but maybe when you are out and about.

We buy refried beans in a can from the international section of our local New World. Also make our own guacamole....have tried freezing some, but even with the lime juice it still goes a bit brown :(

our local burger bar has great fried fish but the chips are crinkle cut frozen ones. I meant the proper chip shop type from many british chippies. Just a foible of mine i suppose. But I maintain that Hellman's is that bit different. I did try the best foods one and it should be the same.
With most stuff over here if you look at the packaging and choose the one most familiar to you it is the same stuff under a different name, but mayo, not for me!

To Moorf, when it comes to mayo just fine will not do:p lol

Interesting, had many chips in NZ and never yet had any crinkle cut ones.

Can only suggest you try a few different shops to see if you can find one that is better, or at least more to your taste. Of all the different chip shops we've visited only found one that had chips that were similar to UK.

TBH I tend to prefer the chips that you normally get in NZ but do like the UK ones occasionally.

You can freeze avocado if it has lemon juice in it I think.

I also used to get avocados from a farmers market and the seller swore you could freeze the whole fruits. Never tried it though. Seems like they would go a little mushy:confused: Though maybe if you are making guacamole that doesn't matter?
