Only been in our nice new dry rental for 4 and a half months and the owners have unexpectedly put it up for sale :wah
We are getting a nice reduction in rent while it is being marketed, but it is a complete pain having people looking around all the time....and they keep leaving all the doors and stairgates open and leaving all the lights on! Our daughter is due to start school round the corner in less than 2 weeks time and has already done her preliminary visits, so we are desperately trying to find another rental close by to avoid too much upheaval. Fingers crossed we will find somewhere suitable for another year or so until we are ready to move to Canterbury.

Oh no!
Is it likely to go quickly?
If not you might find things quieten down after a few weeks of viewing and you may be able to take your time finding another rental.
Cheers

You're not on a fixed term tenancy? Thought periodic ones were a rarity - they certainly seem to be in Welly. If you're on a fixed term, then you can just stay put...

yeah check your rental agreement, as a tenant you have quite a few rights,
or if you like it that much consider buying it??

Join the club.....
Our rental is also up for sale, and for the last 4 weeks we have had an 'Open Home' every Sunday as well as viewings by appointment. On the last open home the agent even forgot to lock up, and left the door unlocked for us to find when we got home much later!! :(
OK we have a reasonable reduction in the rent ($50) but I feel that it puts pressure on us to keep it tidy all the time, something we're not that good at :wah

Just to clarify what happens when a landlord sells:

Sorry to hear that. It sucks I know - it happened to Dusk and I two years in succession a few years back. It's very disheartening. Especially when one of them was really lovely and I'd happily have bought it if we'd had the money then.
Oh well you never know, you might find somewhere better. Serendipity might strike.

Checked all our rights as soon as we were told house was up for sale. We have refused to have any open homes and are only having viewings by appointment... but no-one seems to turn up on time and trying to keep the place clean, let alone tidy is running me ragged with 3 pre-schoolers.
We are very happy in this rental but only have 6 weeks left on our fixed term them it rolls over to periodic. Owners have put in on market very cheap compared to several other houses for sale in street as they are having morgage issues and want rid asap, so even in the current market it is likely to be snapped up very quickly in this area. There have already been several people round for second visits with whole family.
We are moving to Canterbury eventually (when OH work allows...they have agreed to transfer him probably next year) so are not in position to buy the house ourselves. We *think* we have found a slightly smaller rental around the corner, but depends if anyone beats us to the paperwork....dropping it off tonight.
Biggest pain is moving all over again and all the associated costs like carpet cleaning, removal firm to help with furniture, rental agency fee etc

Oh FOM! If you need any help moving let me know as I'm not working yet and for a little while longer we should still have our 4x4. I'm more than happy to come and keep an eye on the wee ones whilst you pack if need be.

Ditto that.
I will be back in NZ on 2nd May and would easily be able to fit in to help with the move. I have a wagon, so can get a fair bit in. Pm me if you would like a hand although I am likely to be off line for about a week.

Thanks very much guys :nice1 .....may well take you up on offer as could do with hand moving smaller stuff and kitchen stuff/bedding etc....really can't face having to pack any of that stuff up again so we plan to basically fill a few boxes on moving day and transfer cupboard contents over a few at a time.
We haven't heard back about the other rental yet....we were one of 2 families interested in it, so keeping fingers crossed.

Shame that we are in south islands that I could look after your three children for you on moving day, so they are out of your way (If I can cope with six children running around in the house, maybe sent older four to sandpit again :laugh )
