I'm currently researching flights from the UK to Wellington for our move to NZ in November.
For those who have booked one-way flights, did you do it direct with the airline or through a travel agent? We have used both Travelbag and Travelmood for booking return trips (both were good), but if emigrating I'm not sure whether it is best to book direct? I'm sure I read somewhere that you get a bigger baggage allowance this way?
Any experiences or thoughts would be very useful.
Cheers

I'm pretty sure the baggage allowance would be the same but I'm sure someone will confirm for sure.
I am looking at OW flights for OH, it does appear to be coming up at a better price direct with the airlines for when he is going.
When we booked some flights with Air NZ we did that direct and although we were handling our own booking - found them very helpful on the telehpne with any queries.
I would check Air NZ, Singapore Airlines on their website and perhaps try Travelsupermarket.com who will do a price check with a number or airlines.

We booked our one-way through a travel agent. Only benefit I can see is that we didn't need to pay everything at once (and so long in advance).
If I could do it again I would probalby go directly with Air NZ. Heard nothing but good things about them!

I believe that if you contact the Airlines direct and advise them that you are emmigrating it is possible to get a larger baggage allowance. It can be on their terms however - eg travelling via LA rather than singapore because it is a quieter route for example. It may be wise to do this via email, because then you will get a written response.
As far as booking the flights are go have you tried Trailfinders, I have always been pleased with the deal that I have got from them in the past, and you may find that you get a return flight as cheap as a one way flight - just a thought...

As commented Air NZ offer a larger baggage allowance if you travel via LA (nothing to do with the type of ticket)
3 other airlines, that I know of, offer 'migrant' baggage allowance if you have a one way ticket and a valid visa, although what they consider valid seems a bit debatable in some cases (eg with Singapore airlines, depends who you speak to their whether they offer it or not!) the others who offer this service are: Emirates and Royal Brunei. In each case I would advise you to contact them directly before booking to make double sure of this.

If you're planning a stopover of a few days, it could potentially be easier to go through a physical travel agent (as opposed to a virtual one like lastminute.com).
Having said, we booked our flight on the Air NZ website with a 10 day stopover in LA with no problems. We had to pay a very small premium for the stopover (about $50 in total I think).
The best thing I can advise is to try every angle and see what's right for you.

:nice1 Daughter Rachel flew with movingplanet baggage allowance. We needed a small truck to pick her up from the airport last Saturday - so it's worth it! She flew with Emirates and they do great food.

I've used www.dialaflight.co.uk for lots of flights and they usually beat other prices- I've even bargained them down in the past.
You can sometimes get them to book your seats too which is a huge bonus on long haul.
Good luck

You can book your specific seats direct with NZ too, but they charge you £40 'admin'. But for such a long flight I consider that worth it.

I'd booked flights for our trip over and back last year through an agent, but then spoke direct to NZ to ask something - while I was talking to the lady on the phone, she asked if I'd like her to book us specific seats, out and back, and she did, for nothing.

I think the fee was actually for us changing the date of our flightm, not requesting the seat *oops*

It depends on the ticket you bought. The cheapest ones cannot be changed, the more expensive ones can. You have to read the fine print.
