Here's the info on Sky HD (http://www.sky.co.nz/high-definition.aspx) on their website.
Maybe more details in the Skywatch magazine if anyone still gets it?

I'm hoping they provide some kind of discount for those of us who have MySky - I'm not paying $599 then paying full price again - they can go whistle!

mysky costs $599!? Their website says the basic package is 49.50/mo. Is the mySky hardware what is $599? is that a one time fee then you own it or its still theirs? how much does it add to your monthly bill?

Yes, it's a one time fee so doesn't add to the monthly fee.
Sky still own the box.
As with the SKY decoder, “MY SKY” will remain the property of SKY. This means the “MY SKY” warranty will never run out and that SKY will service the box if there are any faults. SKY also has the ability to continually upgrade “MY SKY” ensuring subscribers have access to the latest technology, functionality and features which SKY will continue to introduce.

600 bones for a 60 hour hard drive is not cheap! The DVR box i am leaving behind in the US records 200 hours of standard def or 40 hours of HD and i bought it 2.5 years ago for $299US (directv).
Urgh... i do love DVR technology, but i may have to sit this one out for a while.
They should upgrade you to a new HD capable box when HD becomes available - that only seems right, but i guess we'll see.

It's interesting that Sky quote 60 hours but the box can actually do upto 80 hours.

It should also be noted that the My Sky box is actually two complete tuner/decoders in one unit so would expect it to be more than a standard PVR.
Having said that, it hasn't dropped in price since its introduction and by todays standards is IMO over priced. Still wouldn't do without it though :yes

The reason it's still so expensive is because there haven't actually been that many people taking it up. When the guy came with our box he said he only does about 1 installation a week, and he does from Wellington to the Kapiti Coast. OK this was about a year ago, but when I talk to people at work, they don't know what MySky even is.
We don't actually watch that much TV, but we want to watch it when WE want to, which is the main reason we have MySky
I would think that Sky would reward the early adopters of MySky, but I'm really not holding out much hope!

Double edged sword it seems - if they dropped the price to a more realistic one I'm sure they'd have more customers. I'd be tempted if it was 299; they can whistle for 599

well at least with a DVD recorder you would own it, unlike my sky. and the price of the recorders are coming down each year. you can pick them up on Trade me for a reasonable price.

MySky is a PVR (personal video recorder) it has an integrated EPG (electronic program guide) updated by Sky and makes the viewing and recording of any program shown on Sky TV very easy indeed.
It also incorporates twin satellite tuners which allows it to record two different channels simultaneously whilst also allowing you to watch a previously recorded program.
When recording, the actual (original and still encrypted) data stream is stored on the hard disk so there is no loss of quality.
Although it can output the signal to be recorded by a Video recorder etc it has no facility to actually record the data to removable media.
DVD recorders come in many flavours, the most basic doesn't have a hard-disk but could be combined with MySky to provide archival of programs.
More advanced versions include a hard-disk and can appear to offer very similar features to MySky but for terrestrial broadcasts only. They can of course also record the program onto a DVD so that you can archive them etc.
Personally, if you have or are going to get Sky then would go the MySky way, if not then would go with the dvd recorder with hard-disk, or wait for the proposed Freeview version of MySky.
As previoulsy mentioned, Sky are going to release a MySky HD on 1st July so it may be worth waiting until the details are known (assuming HD is something that would be useful to you).

Sorry to revive this old thread / hijack it ...
Anyone know if the UK Sky box (Panasonic) works in NZ or should I rather just try and sell it here and get something new(er) that side?
