I am new to thie site and would like to introduce ourselves . We are South African but have lived in the UK (Kent) for the past 6 years and made the big mistake of returning temporarily to SA for study purposes . Been here since 8 January but want to get out ASAP and has already secured joboffer in NZ and been selected from EOI pool . Would appreciate advice regarding schoolyears , my daughters DOB is 28/07/95 and son 01/12/97 . Which year are the children of same agegroup currently in in NZ ? Would also like to know how to complete EOI kids supplement ( electronic or paper) ?

Hi and welcome.

My eldest son was born in early 95 and will be in year 9 in NZ (yr 8 here - UK) but I think the cut off is May so your daughter could be in year 8. My youngest was born a week before your son and he will go into year 6 (yr 5 here).
I understand that this is something that you need to discuss with each school to determine absolutly though, as there is some flexibility.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Agree with Mels on the school years.

School years in NZ start in January where the term starts at beginning of February, don't know anything about a May cut-off however.

Sorry not well put, I meant the point in the year equivalent to August cut off in the UK, ie. August birthdays are the youngest in the year as September born go into the following year and become the oldest in that year. In NZ this is May.
Was that clearer, not sure - hope so

Well, I'll try again :)

I did understand your comment on there being a May cut-off date similar to the August one in the UK.

My point was that I have never seen mention of this on any NZ website, so either it isn't correct (my understanding is its January) or it's something that I don't know about. Must admit I haven't really looked into this but always willing to learn.

You originally said you thought that it was May, so I'm hoping that someone can confirm / deny when the cut-off date is (unless you have a link?).

Welcome, it is down to the school really, but my son was born Sep 95 and he is in year 8, daughter in Mar 98 and she year 6, it is purely down to the school when you get here, don't worry about it, they usually step up a year as our kids did.

sorry Ian :)

I'm afraid I can't remember where I read that May was the cut off date. You have given me loads of info and links on the subject when I was going thru this stage (very much appreciated by the way :yes )- so it was probably from one of those links. I will try to find it.

Thanks for the info , will try to get my daughter into year 9 , as she has always been the youngest in her school year while in the UK and 18 months younger that children in schoolyear in SA . She definitely wants to go to year 9 as she would have started year 9 in the UK in Sept .
