Here's an observation that may help some of the people trying to maximise their points before submitting their EOI. I spent ages initially running around trying to find every way to claim any extra points. Then my agent pointed out to me the fact that whether I had 110 or 190 points, I would probably still be selected. Once selected, unless you have some skeletons in the closet or perhaps a medical problem you're unaware of, you will typically get in. Sure, extra points can speed things up a bit, but this isn't a competition.

Perhaps there is a flaw somewhere in my argument that I have missed, but I thought I'd share my feelings on beating yourself up over extra points.

The key things are 100 points to enter the pool....and this gives you up to 6 months in the pool. Lots of people on here have been selected with between 100-140 points. You may just have to wait a little longer before being selected for an ITA (invitation to apply)

140 points will get you selected automatically from the pool at the first draw (held fortnightly)

A job offer is the only other thing that will speed up the process - most significant at the ITA stage.

So yes, in some ways it doesnt really matter if you have 110 or 140 points and no job offer in the grand scheme of things.

(we were spurred into action when the points allocation changed last year so we got 145 instead of 135 .... but in retrospect we could have applied much earlier and would probably have an outcome by now!!)

Best of luck with your plans.

Yes, the logic is sound. I deliberately didn't claim for my quals (OH being the main applicant) because I would have had to have gone through NZQA, when we didn't need the points. Once you're over 140, there's no point claiming for stuff that just requires extra paperwork.

That is very encouraging. Thanks so much. We are currently sitting with 115 points and Im frantically searching for a way to get more points, but if its as you say, Im not going to bother. Im at the stage of collecting all my employments references(originals) as I need my qualification assessed, & I see for the full NZQA assessment, you need to submit proof of work experience as well.As soon as this is assessed, we can submit our EOI. Anyway, this had made me feel alot better...
thanks again!

Can anyone point in the right direction of a previous post?
I'm sure I remember a post on here about how everyone had gained their EOI points but I can't locate it through the search.

I'm only after it as I'm not sure I'm even going to make 100 points and really do wonder if I'm reading things wrong or if Skilled Migrant just really isn't the category for me. Was hoping I might spot something in the post that might push me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance :)

I found the points calculator was accurate. Are you getting under 100 with, or without a job offer?

Is it even possible to get under 100 points with a job offer?

Is it even possible to get under 100 points with a job offer?

Was wondering the same, so I gave it a bash. I could get 80 points with a job offer, but then I had to not have any qualifications or work experience. I guess that is understandable since they call it a Skilled Migrant.

That makes sense though, on the basis that if a job requires no qualifications and no experience, then a Kiwi could do it (that doesn't sound right, but you know what I mean!). "Skilled migrant" really means "for jobs which we can't fill internally".

I was hoping to submit an EOI without the pressure of having to run into a job straight away i.e. get out there with residency and then look for work. So the points are without job offer.

I am only thinking this because I am not ready to leave UK yet (was going to aim for next December) but in my mind it would take a while to submit EOI, wait to be picked, complete ITA etc. and then apply for jobs when the house is sold etc.
However, because of the industry I work in is not run of the mill I guess I shall have to wait until next year when I've done everything else and on the cusp to leave and then start looking for jobs, submit EOI etc.

The only thing I find depressing about this whole process is that both my partner and I have jobs in industry's that require specialist knowledge and experience but just aren't 'shortage skills'. I would just like to swap my life here for hopefully a slightly more enhanced version over there.
We are not people who would drain the NZ economy but contribute and yet I somehow strangly feel unwanted :(

Oh well, we will have to look at it from a different angle I guess.
