Well, phone call this morning from our admin lady tells me that we are all being made redundant. What great news ahead of Anzac weekend!!

Big boss phoned me to confirm, but the lowdown is that we all now have to re-apply for our jobs and that we are all in limbo about what may come of it all.

Not the best of positions to be in, considering I have been off with my knee damage for a while now, just waiting for an operation, but not exactly a strong bargaining position.

Time will tell, and we'll just have to see what happens over the coming weeks.

As the saying goes **#* happens! :roll :roll :roll

I'm so sorry to hear that.

One thought though, I work in HR in the US and I really hesitate to lay off anyone who is on family or medical leave. It can be misconstrued as punitive and get my company into all kinds of legal trouble.

I've no idea if there are similar exposures in your region, but could it be worth looking into?

Wishing you health and happiness!

Holy Kakapuku mate, not exactly the news you want to hear as you say considering your plight at this moment. At least you have that elusive NZ work experience that will stand you in good stead at a later date if needed.

Thanks for that, but it isn't just me, the whole company has gone to the wall!!! We'll just have to wait and see... but thanks again to everyone.

Kim, what is this - holy kakapuku :laugh

I suppose I could apply for a position with the Hauraki crowd, maybe apply for the position of "on yer back man" and forge a new relationship with my sidekick "Throbbin" :laugh

Sorry to hear that!

Excuse my ignorance, but why do they make everyone redundant and then make you reapply? Why not pick those they want to let go?

It's the job that's redundant, not the person. In theory. In reality, it's a good way to get rid of a few people and/or keep the rest on at a lesser salary by saying their job is redundant and then making them apply of a very similar position for less money.

Bitter? Moi?

p.s My OH has just been made redundant to :uhoh ho hum

StevieD
24th April 2008, 07:08 PM
Probably all those things and more re holidays etc.

It all stinks really, the company who have bought them out are a very big company, but like anything there is no guarantee of your job, and as mentioned, usually for less money than you were on.

Saying that, I have just looked at their website and they are advertising for positions much more suited to my background, didn't get an answer to my phone call but it is Anzac weekend, but will be on the phone to them Monday as soon as the "get the bullet" meeting is over.

Shouldn't do....so long as you're continuously employed. It's things like 'career breaks' that can seriously mess with you're employment rights eg: pension, maternity benefits.

Not much Vicky, got up to go to the dawn Anzac day service, back home to pick Jan and Kieran up as he was involved with the Scouts in the later parade, he ended up taking a wreath up to the cenotaph with a few of the other little scouts. Very nice and very moving occasion. Just before he was due to go up a lone piper played the tune "The leaving of Liverpool" an old sea shanty, then one of the NZAF planes flew overhead. Good stuff.

I'm, fairly certain it's illegal to make everyone redundant as part of a restructure and then re-hire people back to do similar jobs.

This (http://www.emacentral.org.nz/nzte/restructuring_redundancy.asp) more or less says that.

Wait until you've got something in writing about their intentions, then contact the Department of Labour and ask them if what they're doing is legal. I would start job hunting anyway - I'm sure I wouldn't stick around with a company that valued it's work force so little.

Good luck! You never know where this might take you ... being made redundant brought me to New Zealand :D

Thanks for the info Dougie, I'll have a trawl through the info when I get clearer information on Monday.

Nicola, no worries, as others have said, it may be a blessing in disguise. As it is, I am on ACC at the moment anyway, waiting for my knee operation so I at least have a fallback of sorts, not the best but better than a kick up the bum as you say.

StevieD

Sorry to hear about this Steve, i did hear when i was up your way, only just back online.

Hi Stevie just read this. I,m sure you will be ok look at how many jobs me and kim have found,:D It Does sound dodgy what there doing though.nearly as dodgy as what happened to bev, she got a new job put her notice in and then the supposed new employer rang her to say they had got bad references,
She only gave two ,her old job in england which we got a copy of and her present employer who denies giving bad reference, End result bev becomes unem, ployed and we checked and had no legal redress. luckily as her present employer was feeling guilty we reckon she was offered an extra six weeks work and has now got another job and we certainly arent using her present employer for references,:( anyway good luck mate i,m sure something will turn up

Thanks Jayne, aren't people so lovely on here!!!

Had the meeting yesterday morning. We have to re-apply for our jobs, new bigger company taking over. The gist of the meeting was that they don't have any technicians with our experience in this area, they are taking over the current contracts that the existing company service, so things could be promising. I have already put my expression of interest form in and sent my CV off to HR as soon as I got home from the office.

Now we'll just have to wait and see what goes......

Thanks to everyone for your care and consideration, it really is a great help.
