Myself & My partner came over back in Feb 07, took the plunge and arrived on a Tourist visa - got jobs and are on work permits, living very happily in Christchurch. Have been working for the the same employers since we arrived, I'm a Travel Agent and John is an apprentice builder. We applied as skilled migrants last year after being here for about 8 months but our application was declined (not enough points). My job is on 'immediate skills shortage' so applied as the principle applicate, but it's not recognised as 'skilled work' only level 4 (under new rule). John is an apprentice builder and will have 3 yrs exp in Nov so we're thinking that we can try again this time him being the princple applicate. He cannot further his experience on paper, (cost $20,000) for a CPIT course as a non-resident, so were hoping the experience will be enough. I am currently doing a ATTTO NZ qualification at my work place, so that helps on points. Basically we every day people who are scrapping the barrel to stay. Christchurch is our home now and the thought that perhaps we won't make it is scary. We have just got engaged and looking forward to buying a house, we are both 32yrs old. Anyone have any further advice for us, that could help. Thanks Cathy & John

Can you have an informal discussion with someone from immigration over there?

I assume you mean your EOI was turned down for not having enough points. How points did your original EOI have?
And how many do you hope to have now?
I'd like to know as I'm in a similar situation (or rather I will be If I go now on a work visa).

Sorry no advice but just wanted to send you some words of encouragement. It sounds as though you are both doing all the right things...is there anything else you could do to get more points?
Congrats on the engagement! :clap

Hi there
I'm sorry, I don't have any specific advice. Just that it's so frustrating that NZ will turn good, hard working people away because of 'technicalities'. Good luck with everything plus DON'T GIVE UP - I've read so many stories of people sticking it out, trying to fight their case and eventually being successful so hopefully this will happen to you guys too.
