My oh has asked me to find out about having a medical as an HGV driver. he will be 45 next year, and in the uk would need to have a medical for His class 1 licence.
Can anyone tell me if He will need to have the equivelant or similar once we get to New Zealand?
Thanks

Hi Cath,
He will be required to have one when he transfers his UK licence for NZ. I am a little concerned regarding the possibility that i would like to keep my HGV option going pass the 45 mark, which is next year. I am hoping that i can have a medical here at that time and send details back to Swansea, so keeping the entitlement.

Hi Kim, thanks for that, wasn't sure whether they had age issues as they do here. I'll give Swansea a ring for you - won't be tomorrow (Monday) I'm afraid as I'm at work all day, but I'll give them a call on Tuesday and let you know.
Thanks

According to the DVLA, apparently you can't.
We enquired about this before we left UK and DVLA requires a UK address to put on your licence and a UK doctors report (or so we were told) as they cannot renew a licence entitlement if you reside in another country. Don't see why personally, your HGV is an entitlement that you have earned and a certified doctors report from NZ should be as valid as a UK one IMHO.
They also said that you don't have to do it 'in time' for your 45th. There can be a gap between your 45th and the time of renewal.
Cath - maybe you could ring DVLA and tell us what they say to you?
We will look into renewing S's in July whilst we are on hols... watch this space.

You know how to put a frown on my mug don't you Jules. So you need a UK address to put on your licence. Well here's a question: does this mean we as citizens of the UK would be driving illegally should we return at any point as we still hold the UK licence and that has our old UK address on it?? Don't think i would produce my NZ one should i be asked to produce the licence by the law.

I know Kim, it's barmy isn't it. When we go back, if we get pulled I'm going to tell 'em we've moved and give 'em your old address!! They can send the fine there....:laugh
Lets hope that the guy I spoke to at DVLA (whom, it must be said, struggled a bit with the English language) had got it all wrong.
Lets hope Cath comes back to this thread tomorrow with some good news.

Sounds a lot like the typical english pedantic government department way of doing things that I have come to know and love!!!!!!! One of the reasons I left the civil service - I processed jobseekers allowance and was constantly frustrated with the lack of common sense!!!

Just spoke to DVLA - 0870 number:wah I was told that the medical has to be done by a DVLA approved doctor, but it can be done at any time past 45 and you just contact them to renew if you decide to come back:confused: :laugh

You could have used the geographical number instead, you can find the appropriate one here:-Say No to 0870 (http://www.saynoto0870.com/) (Just search for DVLA).
