Just wanted to let you know, when my parents came for three months, we looked at long term car hire for them, which was going to be very expensive. So instead we endedup buying a second hand car for them. The car cost $3000, $54 insuracne, needed a WOF before we sold it $40, and we have just sold it this weekend for $3000. So it was VERY cheap for dad in terms of hire costs.

I know we could have ended up selling it for a lot less, but it was still cheaper to actually buy a car and sell it on if we had needed to for a fraction of the cost.

So really all I wanted to do - was make people aware that if they have got long term visitors out, it may be another option to look at! :)

There are outfits that specialize in this, usually they advertise for vehicles backpackers. We used one in Mount Wellington once, bought the car for 2000, used it for 4 months and they bought it back from us for $1700 at the end of our stay. Good deal

Visitors to our NZ family have done this with motorbikes, too.

Thanks for that; we'd thought of it for our visitors but good to hear it's actually viable.
