I've just heard I've got a telephone interview for a position in Dunedin (my favourite city :clap ) on Wednesday evening.
I've never had an interview over the telephone and wondered if anyone had any words of advice, or tips as it must be different to a face to face interview.
Thanks guys.

| had one but it was fairly informal. The only thing that bothered me was the slight delay with the distance involved, found myself accidentally interrupting the chap and vice versa. So I just slow down a bit now on these long distance calls and its fine.

David had a telephone interview before going to NZ for a face to face interview (which he got!)
With the telephone interview he researched the company in advance so could say etc why he wanted to work for them. He also put down some key points of previous careers to refer back to at a quick glance. My hubbie is a fast speaker so he wrote 'speak slow' at the top of his papers!
Good luck:nice1

The delay actually gives you time to collect your thoughts, so let it happen and don't rush in, as I also found I was interrupting the interviewer!
Good luck!

I found it just as nerve wracking as a face-to-face interview. I thought having my papers in front of me would help, but was still to flustered to have found what I was looking for anyway. And they still asked those dreaded "behavioural" interview questions!
Good luck! :D

Hi I had a phone interview and received the job offer last Wednesday (Consulting Firm). We never did a videoconference or face-to-face interview.
My advice would be:
-Be confident. At the start of the conversation the interviewer is probably just as unsure of the outcome as you are. If you're confident then you'll be able to comfortably sell yourself to him/her
-Talk about your accomplishments and what you're capable of doing. They want to know what they're investing in
-Be polite and friendly...Just be yourself
-Try to feel the interviewer out...If they want to have small talk then you should flow with that. If they're extra serious then it's probably not the time for jokes.
You'll do fine. There's a shortage of good workers in the country and if you have what they're looking for then...you know.
All the best.
P.S. If you go into the interview or answer the phone knowing and believing that you'll get the offer, then you will. :nice1

I replied to this last night but our connection was playing up, tsk :)
for the interview my couple of bits of advice are:
* take notes (you won't be able to remember everything that was said!)
* smile and relax as much as you can, a perceptive interviewer will be able to pick up on this :)
* have some querstions written down, so you don't have to think of some mid interview. if the ones you've written down have been covered - just say that they have ;)
