How many bags did you successfully take as excess baggage?

Just curious as I've started packing and the books took up 3 boxes (50lb and under to meet the weight requirements).

We took 2 bags as excess baggage on Air NZ, very successfully. They both came on the same plane as us, but I was told that excess baggage won't go on your flight if there's no space in the cargo hold. I don't remember what they said about how many bags you can take as excess, suggest you call the airline and ask. Air NZ call centre staff were always lovely & helpful when I kept calling them with these kinds of questions.

I have an additional question in that same department:
what if you have a flight connecting to Air NZ (but als Star Alliance e.g. Britishs Midland) - can they take and charge you for the excess baggage? Or does it only work if you only fly one airline?

Pebbles,

I have a flight in the US connecting to My Air NZ flight. I purchased them all through the Air NZ website. I then called the US airline (United) and found out that my baggage limit is the same all the way through, despite the fact that if I had purchased the flight through united I would only have been allowed one checked bag.

Also, Oregonkiwi, I spoke with AirNZ and they told me there's no limit.
