Today I went for my 3 yearly cervical smear test :uhoh

They had a choice of 2 ,a simple test with the glass slide for $16 or a more in depth one for $40 .

She told me when I am 45 [a few years away yet !!] I could have a free Mammogram or if I wanted to have before I was 45 it would be $100.

Finally registered at a Doctors [after 2 and half years nearly of being here].

Smear or pap tests in the Uk were free.

I had one last year - I had to visit the doctor anyway and the receptionist asked me if I would like to wait, to see the nurse as well and have it done which saved me another consultation fee! :nice1

You finally did it then! well done....

I just paid for the docs visit when I did mine, no seperate charge for the tests...

I asked my doctor about the difference in the two types of smear tests as I was concerned it was mostly marketing hype, which it mostly is. It's not a more in depth test just a different way of viewing the results. 99% of women will be fine with the more traditional method. The more expensive test is recommended for women who have a history (ie: more often than not) of getting "inconclusive results" and end up having to redo tests.

As you may have guessed, I've had more than my fair share of appointments with men with cold hands, who insist on having a good look up my choof. I've also had a few smear tests as well :p:D

:no :no well ladies never heard it called that before and thats a first in my line of work !!!! glad to hear the screening tests are similar time frames to UK eventhough you have to pay for it ? perhaps I need a trip to the doctor before we go - hopefully one with warm hands !!!!

I wonder how many guys have had a sneaky look at this thread ? I just recall my days as a student nurse ( many moons ago ) when a dear little old man saw his wife coming into the ward and went to greet her forgetting his catheter bag was attached to the bed ( prostate ward ) it must have been like kind of giving birth when the balloon that anchors it in came out still INFLATED !!!! bless he did not do it again . those where the days !!!!!!

1st May 2008, 08:37 AM
Have to say they are pretty quick here I had mine done the week before christmas & was told results could be delayed due to the christmas holidays. The nurse phoned me exactly 7 days after to tell me all was fine :nice1 . The reason I was there was because I had my smear done in the UK before we left in the June & still no results before we left in the September. Then when my mum recieved a letter from the doctors asking me to go back in the October as they could not get a clear result !!!!!!!!!! Not surprised giving the amount of time it had taken. So will say yes you do have to pay for them here but hey worth every cent & at least you get your results back quicker.

Jackie (my moan over for the day)

I dont know if any of you have also noticed, but I have had two blood tests here in NZ at different clinics, 1 smear test and an internal scan and each time not one of the doctors wore those surgical glove thingys. I was just a bit suprised because in the UK even the dentists wear them. Or maybe we just have a few more germs in the UK :laugh :laugh

I'm sneaking a look at this site at work and desperately trying to conceal my mirth so as not to have to explain what is going on! Hysterical!

And good to know about the two types of tests - I got a reminder to have one retaken from the UK as last was "inconlusive". Better not put it off now...

I can just imagine Blue Peter knocking up one of those out of an old Fairy Liquid bottle. Just the thing for Mother's Day. Probably better with on old egg box eh?

Can't type cos I can't see through the tears of mirth running down my face whilst hysterically giggling like a schoolgirl.

Can just imagine Valerie Singleton (complete with old egg carton) asking John Noakes to pass her the string - that's if he has any left from his Tracey Island.

You have just reminded me to surf re smear if you have had a hysterectomy, as my mother keeps telling me I still need one. Gran got cancer despite having a hysterectomy.

So I looked on google, then google images for a diagram to see which bits I thought I still have left, as can't remember which type of hysterectomy I had. Did not know there were 4!!

So no smear for me, but had boobs done recently. the girl phoned me 2 days later and gave the scare of my life, all she wanted was where were my previous x-rays but I had already stopped breathing by then.
