Hello. What field are you in? It would be great if you could post any info you pick up about the do's and don'ts that NZIS are putting out at the moment. I am trying to make my business suitable for LTBV applicants, so up to date info would be much appreciated.
@Jaybo, are you thinking of buying a carpet cleaning franchise, being self employed, or buying a functioning, stand alone business with employees?

Thank you all for the welcome.
Nick88, doing research I came upon the story of a couple who went to NZ on a visitors visa with the intent to apply for the LTBV. They arrived in NZ, found the business they wanted only to be told they could not buy on a visitors visa, they talked to Business migration, applied for the LTBV, were accepted in 16 days. They have been there for a little over a year. Every time someone tells me how difficult it is, I think of them. I don't think everyone will be able to go the same way but it doesn't hurt to try. For myself, I've worked in accommodations most of my adult life so that's what I first looked into but I am alone and I have friends in the business and they tell me they never have time off. Not what I want at this time in my life. I have experience in seaming and retail so I'm looking into that, Monday to Friday, 9 to 5 suits me fine. Cheers, Kristina

GOOD LUCK! We have friends who moved out of a (successful) accommodations business for exactly that reason.

The LTBV experience I had was in motel management, and we got out as soon as the stickers were in the passports. Being on call 24/7 gets a bit wearing after a while.

Nick88, you said you had a business you wanted to try to sell to a migrant going over on an LTBV. Have you talked to Business Migration if your business qualifies and how would you advertise it? I think I have almost every 'business for sale in NZ' site that I could find; not sure how you could put that your preference would be to sell to a migrant if it were even possible to stipulate such a thing. Cheers, Kristina

It isn't really a preference, it's more that we wanted to be able to market the business to potential immigrants when the time came. Before the motel, the search for a business didn't really throw up many viable options, and we thought that with a bit of planning and the right timing we could have a business that would tick all of the NZIS boxes, and give the new owners a reasonable living.
I've had a look at the NZIS site and all of the forms that need to be filled out for an LTBV, and the business would be suitable. The real crux of the application is the business plan that the potential buyers formulate. They would need to produce an improvement in the business, which is something we have already started, but will not bear fruit for another couple of years, which is the sort of time frame in which growth needs to be demonstrated (hence the timing). They also need to show a benefit for NZ, which can be achieved by employing a part-timer (we do everything ourselves at present).
In terms of where to market it, I was going to target industry publications overseas, and the ubiquitous Trademe.

I grow houseplants, big ones. We specialise in supplying the interior landscaping trade all over NZ. We are the only nursery in the country growing the species we do, in the way that we do.

Hi
i have come in on a LTBV, me and my partner bought a failing Farm Park business in Kaikoura in Sept 07 (still struggling to get it working). We moved for the same raesons as most - better lifestyle. The application took ages to get sorted, business plans, medical, research proof etc. anyway it got approved realy quickly with no xtra questions asked !! we've just had our visa's renewed for the remaining 3 years. We were advised to send immigration 110% of anything they ask for, so we did. Things i think will get more difficult at the end of the three years when we apply for PR under the entrepenure catagory. So just make sure everything is thorough and covered in the application.
As for the west coast (South island), buitifull but watch out for the sand fly's !!

Thanks, I've heard of them; am also considering Dunedin as I have family there, though my brother keeps telling me how cold it is there. I've told him he should move to NI but his wife likes it in Dunedin as she grew up there. Have to go over and have a look see for myself.
