Probably it doesn't! In my young day, she croaked in ancient crone fashion, ALL calendars and diaries in the UK started the week with a Sunday, and it was quite a shock when I began studying in France to find that their tradition was to start with Monday - for the first little while I was over there, I kept writing things on the wrong day, going by habit to a place on the page, rather than reading what it said. But now in the UK, you do find things, particularly for business use, printed with the Monday start.

I find it quite useful to have Saturday and Sunday next to each other on the calendar so you can scrawl things across both of them. My current calendar splits them as it shows the week starting on Sunday. It's mildly inconvenient.

OK... I suppose that I can open my mind wide enough to accept the possibility that the day upon which the week begins is subjective (even though it does hurt a bit). However, if someone pipes up and states that they believe that the first month of the (Gregorian) calendar is February, I will be unable to follow.

I grew up in the UAE where the first day of the week was a Saturday. But then they changed it and now it is a Sunday.
I think that in the UK the first day of the week is, traditionally, a Sunday but elsewhere in Europe it is a Monday.
Although they are all simply arbitrary dates to let us see order in a chaotic world. If you embrace the chaos it is far easier (or alternatively just get the wife to tell you what you should be doing and when!).
