In most towns, villages etc you see a sign saying "domain" - what exactly does this mean?

When we stay at PBs sisters house the kids spend alot of time at the 'domain'.
In Ashhurst the domain is a kind of public park. A real good adventure playground in the trees, large open space for footie/rugger etc. Public BBQ's and a real good woodland walk.
I would imagine all domains are along these lines.
Hope this helps.

Our Office is opposite the Auckland Domain....nice, on Carlton Gore Road and it is just that.
I took my bike to work last Friday got the ferry at Half Moon Bay at 0815 35 mins later I was in the city. I was a bit unsure about my cycle route up to Newmarket so thought I'd go accross Grafton Bridge, but to get to Grafton Bridge I went up Symonds Street. This took alot out of me as I've not been on my bike to work for a number of years....I know im going of the subject here....forgive me, :laugh but I did cycle through the Domain on my way home and its about 4 Cricket Squares (all weather) a running track a path that runs around it and a sort of grandstand.
All of which is surrounded by big trees, I dunno where the name Domain comes from though, so there!

Thanks guys, I figured it was like a park or something but wondered if it had some "significance" in the village/town life as in a meeting place in time of crisis or something... I guess it's just a park or green space like the village green! :P
