Hi All

I guess this may sound like a really stupid question. However here goes. I plan to buy a bike when I get to NZ (just had my nice CCM R30 stolen, bolt cutters through the chain) so have been looking on NZ websites and have come across the term Agriculture/Farm bikes. These look perfect for a cheap on/off road commuter. Thought I would get one until I get settled and buy something a bit bigger to tour on. So here comes the question, I was wondering are then only available new – for some tax reasons perhaps- to people who can prove that work in the agriculture industry. Guess you can tell I am a city bloke.

Thanks for any help.

I'm sure anyone can buy them new, try one of the agricultural farm/quad bike specialists, these are usually out of the main town.

yep, i saw these 'farm' models awhile ago from honda nz site too. nxr125 looks nice (and cheapest). i was just wondering why do they badge them as agricultural/farm bikes?

Lots of farms around us used them to assist in moving cows from one field to another field or round up them in large field ready for feeding! Much easier & better access if using bikes than car/4x4.

Usually a "farm" (http://www.honda-motorcycles.co.nz/bikedetails.asp?BikeTypeId=8) bike is not actually ridden on the road (well most of the ones I know of they don't go on the road - just farm tracks and private land, they don't have indicators) so when looking at one you need to check it will be allowed on the road.

and most "motocross" (http://www.honda-motorcycles.co.nz/bikedetails.asp?BikeTypeId=2) bikes are not allowed on the road - ie they don't have indicators etc.

which is why they are listed separate on websites.

go into any bike shop and they are most happy to talk shop

Thanks katansbob I've been looking at bike dealers in Invercargill on the web so will take note of your useful advice when I arrive in Southland
