if i am reading this right you only need a complete medical and xray if you want your visa/permit for 2 years.

a completed Medical and X-ray Certificate, less than three months old and a police certificate, less than six months old – if they intend to stay in New Zealand for longer than 24 months
from:http://www.immigration.govt.nz/community/stream/employ/employingtemporaryworkers/howtoapply/generalwork/

so if we get work permits for one year we only need a chest xray?

and hopefully we will have our pr by then.

You need the complete medical and X-ray cert for PR too though.

They are only good for 3 months, so if you're applying for PR at the same time as the work permit, you might as well get it all done at once.

But if you'll be applying for PR later, then only getting the short term health info might work.

from what the immigration told us in the wellington branch the EOI/PR could take up to 9 months. so we would need to get the med & xray done again. it seems cheaper to get the temp medi & xrays for now.

We came over on 1yr work visas and had no tests at all, just applied for the visas.
