I must not be putting the right search terms in, but finda and yellowpages aren't any real help.
How can I find a general practitioner near me? I'm in Kingsland, if anyone can go ahead and recommend one. I think I have bronchitis or some other respiratory infection and have decided after nearly a week of sickness I need a doctor. And out of curiosity, what are they called here? Aussies call them GP's.
This is my first visit to a doctor in NZ, so what kind of prices can I expect for a GP and a round of antibiotics?
And one more - (this is a long shot) is my Aussie Medicare card valid here? I'm guessing not, but on the slight chance it is...
Thanks.

You find Doctor in the front of white pages/phone book...green section, just before nornal phone book start and it say "Registered medical practitioners & medical centres" - just look for medical centre in your areas then call for appt with Dr/GP
Price for visit to GP is varied, depend on areas, mine cost $32 and again depend on which antibiotic and have you got PR/visa or not?

All doctors and health services are listed in the white pages. You can go to the website and search.
http://www.whitepages.co.nz/
Try doctor, medical and health and compare the results for each. It's not easy as it's not just GPs listed, it's radiologists, urologists, everyone.
Or you could ask your nearest pharmacist where the local Doctors are.
Good Luck and hope you are feeling better soon.

We live down in Hawkes Bay, so cant advise costs for Auckland, but we pay either $25/28 for a consultation and costs for medication do depend on what youve been prescribed as well as what type of visa you are on. I have been lucky with my meds, not cost more than about $5..........hubby on the other hand got prescibed some cream and shampoo for his eczema and ended up paying over $70!!!!!!!!
I work for the Respiratory Outpatients down here and we deal with a lot of people with bronchitis and i know how nasty it can be.
Good luck and dont forget to get it sorted!!!!!!!

Ah HA, they're lurking in the White Pages! Sneaky little buggers. I'll have a look, thanks for that.
Thanks for the prices too; that's a lot less than I was expecting. I'm an Aussie so I don't have a visa, and I'm unsure what PR is so I probably don't have that. :-)
Thanks again.

Wow, prices change according to visa? I suppose that's so people don't come to NZ specifically to get the cheap meds. I'm an Aussie - I expect to pay full price! :laugh
Thanks; being sick is no fun, especially when I have to get out there and find a schlep-y day job *plus* look for auditions *plus* get to the grocery store to keep myself fed...I need a nap. :(
